This isn't a Top 10 of 2014 bunch of coins... I just thought it would be fun to put together some retrospective virtual trays as the year winds down. This particular tray gets its inspiration from Doug's $100 Coin Show challenge, but cheats in that the coins are various online purchases throughout 2014 rather than from one specific show. I selected six worthy coins with a total cost (including shipping) of $100, resized the pictures to proportion, and got my first virtual tray! Please post any virtual trays of your 2014 pickups you feel like sharing, not necessarily just $100 trays.
Cool stuff. I have gotten too many that I would be in photoshop all day doing it. Plus I am that lazy to not wanna bother. Easier to go on my forvm gallery and click on "last added" and start in January of 2014 till now
Z you got some great coins at jw prices, i'm mostly a bonehead when it comes to setting up these kinds of things, maybe i can get my Son to help me.Very nice..
That Probus is outstanding as is the Crispus. Great prices for all of them. I guess I have competition for cheap prices. I'm going to have keep my eye on you. Sleep on this...
I like the idea of the $100 tray, and I will make one to post later, but in the meantime I've been assessing my collecting habits over the year. I've collected some very lovely high-grade coins, and my reasons for collecting them need no explanation, but lately I've become intrigued with keeping my eyes open for scarcer coins that might be hiding among common offerings. This year I cherry-picked more of these coins than anything else. Here's a representative tray - I probably missed a few. Note that the Constantine/Sol coins are common types, but the two coins in this tray represent one unlisted, and one R3 variety. These are not always lovely coins, but I get a thrill out of finding something scarce that has seemingly gone unnoticed by other collectors... To hone my cherry-picking superpowers, I've been assembling and studying a synopsis of types from RIC VII and VIII. Here's a sample from RIC VIII Amiens 350 - 353 GLORIA ROMANORVM; emperor on horseback, spearing enemy; Decentius, Magnentius. VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAE; two Victories, VOT V MVLT X; Decentius, Magnentius. SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES; Chi-Rho; Decentius, Magnentius. 353 FEL TEMP REPARATIO; falling horseman; Constantius II, Gallus. Trier 337-340 AETERNA PIETAS; emperor holding globe and spear; Divo Constantino. Quadriga/Hand of God; Divo Constantino. GLORIA EXERCITVS; two soldiers one standard; 3 brothers. PAX PVBLICA; Pax holding branch and transverse scepter; Helena. PIETAS ROMANA; Pietas with infant; Theodora. VIRTVS AVGG NN; soldier with spear, resting on shield; 3 brothers. Rome commemorative; Remus/Romulus. Constantinople commemorative; Victory. etc. These lists are quite long, but by reading the volumes and writing down the different types produced at every mint, I develop my instincts for spotting things that look out of the ordinary. One of my goals this year is to finish these two lists and hopefully find a few more respectable scarcities.
Thanks, Bing. Funnily enough your bug-eyed monster actually was the last thing I saw before hitting the sack last night. Slept like a baby .
More power to your superpower, JA! That's a handsome looking tray, and yeah, it's always fun picking up a scarcer type and must be doubly so when you cherry pick the overlooked ones.
Here is my virtual tray....bronze portraits of the Olympians. Not yet complete, not under a hundred, but I guess that's ok. Anyway it's been fun collecting these. Three Olympians are not shown, I have one of them now, Hera, but can't get a decent photo, the other two I don't have yet. They're not scaled to size as well as some of you do.
those are awesome guys. i have some time off work for a while, i'll try and do something like that. doucet, what is the lower left coin???
chrsmat, the lower left coin is Punic from ancient Spain, Malaga, Malaka. Beardless head of Hephaistos with conical cap / Temple with four columns 3rd c. BC
Here's my second virtual tray retrospective, coins of Corinth... A Corinth stater was my first Greek coin, and one I posted back in early January this year. Thereafter I picked up a few more of the winged horsies for my little stable... two more staters and a couple of other denominations. I'm still on the lookout for a nice drachm and a decent archaic stater.
