Is this a special variety? I am no expert with coins. I have been collecting paper money for 30 years but never got into coins but I do like these.
That is a dang shame! Is real and real rough! Not sure on die variety without looking but in that condition I don't think it matters a lot still worth a couple hundred bucks
I paid $450. I have been trying to sell it for $500. I just am not sure of what variety. Even when I look it up I am not sure.
I have to agree, in that condition variety is of minimal importance. However, I believe it is BB 121, with the "Amateur Diecutters Reverse" according to Bowers V.1 p 312. 300-500 pieces known.
In that kind of condition you probably can I have one I paid $100 for far nicer. I wish I could find someone to fix it. Was a nice choice vf that some idiot tried to change the last digit of the 1800 date to a 4 I know it'd always grade tooled or damaged but I'd just like to make it read what it originally said you can buy a problem bust dollar fairly cheap as there's a lot of them. What's hard to find is a good clean original surfaces coin.
It's a really nice coin anyway. According to this it's worth about $900, so you are doing great: http://cointrackers.com/coins/13968/1798-draped-bust-dollar/
He does real fine work, too. This coin, however, although it would look much better plugged probably isn't worth the cost of fixing it as it would cost more to have him work on it then the coin would gain in value.
