Depending upon picture quality I found this roll searching today and there is part of the top of the memorial struck into this obv erse 1978 cent. That's not glue around the edges. My find of the day.
I wish the pictures were more clear because it's not quite convincing. Perhaps you should mail me the cent for a closer examination. If genuine, congrats, but I look forward to hearing input from more seasoned collectors.
Using a scanner and this is the best I can get w/o going over the accepted pixel limit for here. The piece from the reverse is upside down here but from my vantage point I can see clearly the markings from the top of the memorial. With a 30X magnifier that is raw metal around the edges. I even carefully used a dentist pick to try and pry off but to no avail.
Old beat copper bronze Lincoln memorial I take distilled water to. Clash maybe reverse photos would help.
If it was struck through a fragment from the reverse of another coin the fragment would be pressed in flush with the surface of the coin not left sticking up above the surface as this appears to be. This is something stuck to the coin that has had another cent stuck to it.
I was wondering how a thin fragment of the copper cent would end up there to begin with. I did notice what appears to be drip stains from the fragment behind the ear which could be from glue, just a thought. Maybe somebody was messing around or trying to fool somebody?
It does look like clue to me. Especially the bottom part, which is why I recommended a dip in acetone.
Yep yep I agree furryfrog 02. It may only remove the drips, but might be able to show more of an edge to them showing it was somehow altered.
If it was actually a die chip it wouldn't have dissolved. Obviously it was something else stuck to the coin.
I am joking. I had a cent that had raised areas that I thought were from a die chip. A few people suggested I should "send it in" to be authenticated. I think it was you Furryfrog that suggested the acetone and you were right. If it wasn't you then I apologize. It was glue!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Probably some dripped glue. Some people have a lot of fun hoping they will confuse someone. Certainly not going to send in to be verified, just keep for an interesting oddity.
