Saw this today about a time capsule believed to be buried by Sam Adams and Paul Revere in Boston: http://beta.next.cnn.com/2014/12/11/us/boston-time-capsule-paul-revere-sam-adams/index.html They think there are coins inside, and one fell out: https://twitter.com/carlwbz/status/543072024911155200/photo/1 Can anyone make out what it is?
They also say in the news clip that they 'soaked the contents in acid' after the 1855 excavation. Lovely.
Yup, just doing their job as responsible conservators, as best they understood how, circa 1855. Yet another illustration of why problem-free older coins are so hard to come by -- and, for that matter, why TPG standards are sometimes a bit "relaxed" for those issues.
