PCGS re-submission question

I purchased an 1851 $2 1/2 Liberty tonight graded MS62 by PCGS. I paid a little more than I wanted, but I noticed it was a 1851/1851 double date, and was not attributed on the slab. What would I need to do to get this regraded, and have them note that on the slab? I want to make sure it does not down grade any. Would they do it for free since it was missed? I would be OK with NGC grading it as well. I actually might prefer it since I am a member and can submit directly, where as with PCGS I am not. Would this be easier/cheaper?

I think you could re submit with the variety attribution designation. Not sure as I usually crack em out before I send em in

Don't the grading services charge extra for attributing errors and put that service on some different tier?

If you submitted the coin originally, paid the added fee for attribution, and they failed to add it to the holder, then yes, they should, and probably would add it for free.

I'm quite sure they will not assign the attribution to this coin for free, and I would never expect them to.

If the fee was not paid in the beginning, that makes sense. Would it be cheaper than a normal first time grade to just have them add the variety and keep the grade the same? Is there no way for me to submit to PCGS if I am not a member? I do not like the "official" coin dealer in town, and would not want him touching my coin to submit it. I am a member with NGC, so might have to suck it up and pay full price to regrade with them.

Why not call NGC and ask them what it would cost to re slab in their holder with the attribution added? I believe you can also cross over and specify no lower than present grade and you might get lucky and get a bump up.

To get the coin attributed by PCGS only - 1851/1 2 ½ Gold PCGS Coin # 145705:

    Before 12/31/2014:
Application Fee (Handling Fee) $ 8.00
    Attribution Fee $ 24.00
    Return Postage (value under $1000) $ 19.95
    TOTAL $ 51.95

    After 01/01/2015/2014:
Application Fee (Handling Fee) $ 10.00
    Attribution Fee $ 18.00
    Return Postage (value under $1000) $ 19.95
    TOTAL $ 47.95

If you want to get the coin “Re – Graded” at the same time, submit in the current holder and PCGS grade guarantee insures that it will not down grade for an extra $32.00 on a Regular submission as long as the value is $1,000.00 or less.

Side note: Currently PCGS has only two of this variety in their population reports, one graded VF 45 and the other graded MS 62.

    Not sure what NGC charges

Your best bet is to piggyback on someone else's pcgs submission. You'd save a bit on handling fees if it's spread out among a few coins. I seldom send less then 10 coins when I do a submission

How do you piggyback on someone else's submissions? Know someone or go to a dealer who does bulk submissions? I've never sent out a coin to be slabbed so I'm curious.

It might also be important to try an determine how rare this repunched date is, and how much demand there is for it. (Just because PCGS only lists two does NOT mean that it is rare, just that only two people have paid to have the variety identified.)

If it is common and just not normally noted, or if it doesn't command a significant premium (because few people collect gold by variety) it might just make more sense to just put a sticker on the slab indicating the variety and not spending the money for the re-slabbing. Just searched Heritage and found 12 listings for an 1851/51 $2 1/2 having been sold. That is out of about 350 1851's sold. Two of them were PCGS, neither of which were identified as such on the label.

Just know someone who's submitting coins for grading and add yours along with theirs. I've sent coins for people before. I don't have enough to go out for awhile I just did a big one I got 37 coins out right now between pcgs and ngc. Hoping for results soon. Pm me if you want to know when I'm sending out again I'd be happy to add it to one of mine

Even if you get them to attribute for free, or there is some other mechanical error which they agree to fix for free, re-submitting never really is "free", since you are paying shipping and probably insurance as well. Not to mention you time, and packaging materials, etc. :(
