That's the tough part about auctions - they usually bring what they're worth. Sometimes they bring way more than that, sometimes a bit less. The game is finding those that are going for less and swooping in. Or, ya know, you could pay too much. That's usually what I end up doing! But then again, with my collection, I don't really have the luxury of picking and choosing where I get my coins.
I can relate to this when it comes to Nabataeans. Only a few dealers ever have them, and the ones with the really good coins are relentless in refusing my offers, lol, so I just pony up and pay through my teeth.
I usually like browsing through retail inventories of coins. To me, it's much more enjoyable and relaxing than auctions.
I only know one dealer who has Nabataeans often. I wanted to get one there but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Nabataeans just don't come up at auction very often. None of the European houses have had any lately. CNG had a handful over a few auctions earlier in the year, but I got trounced on every coin I bid on. So retail is basically all I've got. I'm willing to spend a premium on Nabataean, Southern Levantine, and Arabian coins because that's my specialty, but when it comes to general collecting, I'm with you - I like to browse vcoins and numismall and bargainbin. I've found some very respectable coins for dirt cheap.
I wonder. Those mail bids had to be advertised somewhere, and someone had to be paid to read the bids, correspond with the winners, and so forth. Opening mail bids takes longer than watching bids accumulate on a screen, and sending in a mail order bid certainly takes more time (and money for postage!) than entering a bid on a Web page.
Pecunem Auction 26 Closing Date Extended Unfortunately, yesterday's Pecunem auction did not finish completely. Due to technical problems outside our control, the auction stopped after lot 315. We will resume the closing of Auction 26, presented by Gitbud & Naumann, on Sunday, 14 December at 5:00 PM CET. The sale will restart at lot 316, and the rest of the auction lots will close thereafter at 20-second intervals. You can see when the auction lots close in your own time zone by visiting Pecunem.com. Since lots 1-315 have already closed, the status of these lots will not change. Any bids you placed on later lots will remain in the Pecunem system, so you do not have to place them again. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and we've done everything possible to reduce the impact of this problem. Pecunem Management
