Assuming it is an 1879 with no mint marks on the reverse, it is an OK deal at $24. It would probably grade at about F-12 to VF-20. Is that a rim ding at 7 o'clock?
here's the back. no mint mark. I've been buying all I can find since I had some left to me after a death.
Here's an 1879 that sold today on the bay for $23.50 plus $2.50 S&H. It appears of similar quality but may be a little better if you have a rim ding. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1879-P-1-Mo...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Those are some massive rims... and something weird is going on on the rim under "one dollar" area. Make sure the weight is right.
I agree with the comments about it being fake sadly It looks like it has the slightly plastic-y bubbly unnatural look that is really common on fakes. Hopefully you can get your money back Even if the coin is genuine, you could find a better one that is much more original looking for the same price. Tough break, but we all get em sometimes. "paying tuition" as I've heard it called.
I've had an occasional spanking myself so just learn from it this time as it will stick in your mind better now! Be skeptical at all times and have fun at it too....
