Ebay shipping question

So I bought 8 coins recently. The seller is overseas and listed $9 for shipping on each individual coin auction. He will not respond to Ebay messages, and Ebay is reminding me to pay. Problem is, why would shipping be $72 for 8 coins from Europe? I buy from similar sellers all of the time, and they always combine postage for me. I was expecting $18 maybe for shipping, not $72.

What do you guys think I should do? Should I just pay it, hold out to see if he responds? I do not mind paying some extra for postage, but $72 for 8 small coins I just believe is out of line. Also, I don't "need" these coins, I was just picking up at what I thought was a good price.

    Keep messaging for combined shipping.
If they open a dispute for non payment you can reply the same and they must see it.

Honor the contract. You just made the assumption of a shipping break because of multiple purchases. Is it unreasonable? Of course it is, and a respectable dealer would not do that, but a respectable buyer would also not break the contract. So just suck it up. Don't do buisness with him again, ding him for shipping and communication in the review. Give him a negative, specify the problem and be done with it. He deserves the bad review because he did not respond to your attempts to work out a solution.

I guess $9 for each of eight packages is fine if you receive eight packages, but if you receive one package of eight coins then the seller has also changed the implied terms of the agreement and the total for shipping should also be fair game.

$9 from Europe? Sounds kind of high. Is it from Italy?

As for combined shipping, if you already requested total and tried to contact the seller, you just have to wait. If no answer, contact ebay see what they advise you to do. I wouldn't pay $72 for shipping, that's ridiculous.

From the UK it would cost $5.30 for standard international airmail to the US for a package weighing under 100g.
I would still wait for a combined invoice, if they are not responding something might have happened.
I had a buyer die on me once, the package was returned 3 months after shipping to Spain.

After reading Tom's post, I have changed my position and agree. The seller did break the contract's implied terms and overcharged for shipping which is outlined in Ebays policy of what is reasonable shipping costs.

I would not pay $72 for shipping at all. If it cost him that it would be one thing, but if he won't honor combining just tomake profit, that is just ridiculous and sleazy.

I agree with Mike. Unless the seller specifically stated that he would combine shipping then there is nothing to do but pay up. You bought the items under the sellers terms. Whether he is willing to negotiate those terms after the fact is up to him, and it would certainly be good business practice to do so, but you agreed to $9 shipping per coin.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I think I will wait. Sorry to those who believe I should just pay up, but I have never had a seller refuse to combine a shipment for me. I am not a cheapskate when it comes to shipping, as I fully expected to pay say $20 if one coin cost $9, but to me $72 is simply too much to expect me to pay for them. I have never backed out of a single auction over shipping fees, even if the buyer charged me more than I thought, but in this case I just cannot stomach that much of an overcharge. Like Davey said, it will probably be more like $5 or $6 of actual postage. I am ok with paying more for the sellers time and packaging supplies, but for some reason cannot swallow $72.

It is excessive but you really should have asked. He may not have responded and you would have known he was shady. Now you have a big hassle for something that someone who does business properly would have fixed for you immediately.

Well, after 4 days I heard from the seller. Very nice man from Paris, he charged me $10 shipping, I thanked him and added him to my list of favorite sellers. Maybe the trick was asking friends here for advice. :)

I have buyers ask all the time why shipping is so much from the states but when using the Global ship program on Ebay, I have no control over what Ebay charges after I send to their facility in Ky. One buyer had to pay $23.00 to get a postcard from me that cost $3.00 through this program when I could have sent for a little over $3.00. Always best to contact seller first before you hit that buy button.
