I have $60 in "gift certificates" and can't decide how best to spend it. I was going to work on my U.S. type set, but I stopped by today and they didn't have anything I wanted. SO... This is what I had time to photograph. I have my own ideas, but would love to hear yours. Coins are more fun, but bullion is a better investment. I'm doing both, so that question in and of itself doesn't help me. Caveats: 1) I realize the prices are rather inflated (but hey, not for me!) 2) Grade is almost impossible to gauge because I could only photograph the obverse, with my smart phone, through a glass display case. Bullion $39: 2013 ASE $30: 2014 Maple Leaf $30: 2014 Panda Old Coins $40: $2 of junk silver (all dimes OR all quarters OR all halves; for $1 less, a mixture) $39: 1886-O Morgan $36: 1879 Morgan $27: 1879-O Morgan $27: 1924 Peace (2 available) $27: 1922 Peace $24: 1884 Morgan $10: Walkers (8 available) Other $39: 1923 Silver Certificate (not pictured)
Do you have to spend the money at this store? Those prices are too inflated for what all amounts to junk silver or basic bullion. If they have better numismatic coins (like a VF+ Standing Liberty quarter), I would go that route instead of overpriced very common stuff. BTW - VF+ Standing Liberties are not very common, especially pre-1925 ones.
The money can be spent elsewhere, but this is the only coin shop where I can use it. If I don't spend it here, I end up buying tools. More useful in the long run, but nowhere near as fun.
Find another collector who buys frequently at this LCS, and work out a deal for something he owns . . . something you want and he doesn't in exchange for the credit at the LCS.
If you HAD to spend the money in that shop, personally I see the best buy being the panda. If I had $60 I must use there, I would buy two pandas.
O Knowledgeable One, I'll consider that an offer to sell, and am ready to purchase a coin. An "ungraded 2013 ASE at $20/coin max", not a cull as Apmex offers at a greater price. PM me the particulars for completion of transaction. I was ready to purchase one from a normally credible supplier, but realize that you may be a more reliable source. I'll anticipate your PM, as I realize that you wouldn't post an untruth. JMHO
Sure makes me appreciate the coin dealers in my area. If forced to buy something there I'd probably do the Panda.
At the past two coin shows I went to..silver was under 18 an ounce at both shows, and tons of dealers had ASE's for $20 all day long, even $19 if you bought in bulk.
All prices and conditions are both bad. You said that you could not inspect the coins. You must be at a regular antique shop. Go to a coin show or coin club and look. Then make friends with the dealers and you will find better coins and prices for you to collect. At some or the antique and fleas you can find some good deals, but you have to know what you are looking at. Good luck.
Thank you for the published generalities, but my $20 payment is still waiting for a private mailing address to which tons (4000 pounds?) of dealers will deliver paraphrased "ungraded 2013 ASE for $20 max", or for $19 in "bulk" (2 or more?). I believe your secondary "bulk" offer is more acceptable. My $38 payment is waiting for your PM, as I would like to acquire two 2013 ASE for $19/coin "max". I have additional $20 payments available for your "supporters" who post irrelevant responses to my PM request for a credible source of $20 "max" 2013 ASE. Upon initiating an internet search for: "ungraded 2013 ASE @ $20 max", I've yet to receive a credible response. However, all responses are in excess of your stated "$20 MAX" value. I believe your seemingly berating initially posted statement is LUDICROUS as is your subsequent statement: "tons of dealers had ASE's for $20 all day long, even $19 if you bought in bulk". I implore you, "quit while you're ahead". JMHO
I am shocked that this LCS can stay open. $39 for an ASE? Even if that was a typo and it was $29. No, I would not give this establishment any business. I would wait for them to go out of business. However, your money is already in their pockets, and I would have to agree the Panda is the best value. Grab 2 Pandas. Walk away. You won't be coming back. What city do you live might I ask? I travel a bit, and make a point to check out a coin store in every city I am in. I will be waiting out my layover in that city in the terminal.
