Sunk? Dead? Not if you and I keep this discussion going. Would you care to lie down on the sofa and talk about your coins for a little while? You know, a little numismatic psychotherapy? That, by the way, is what happens when you drive 500 miles in a day to visit a collector after being told by the collector that he is serious about selling his collection, when in fact all he really wants is someone to talk to about his coins with NO intention of selling a single bent kreuzer to you. Now heirs, they are so much easier to deal with, no attachment to the stuff, all they care about is the money. Just back-up the car and load-up the trunk.
Hey Hey!! Would you look at that! 1937, what a great year out of the history books. Between the Nazis and Stalin's purge, yikes, what a year. Some great coins though, and only 3 years before the end of collectible world coins in many respects. Maybe it's just me, but there isn't much minted after 1939 that has any interest for me.
I think millions agree with you. be they world or us collectors. Even though the nazis were pretty brutal they did make nice coin designs, something I can't say about the united states coins after this war. I have a friend who has a bunch of these in au-ms and they look pretty nice. nice and shiny.
I said sunk not shrink. I just don't get why people in coin forums are always so damned stubborn(!) and can't take a simple suggestion meant to help them out. It's such a juvenile response and appears lazy as well. If you want to make this thread active in replacing the old thread, then to reach as many of those active members who are 'watching' the other thread, then a sure way to get their attention is to post a link to this thread in that thread and invite them to join here. Many of the members will see an email alert if they subscribe to them for that thread and are likely to come on over here. Announce what you've got brewing here and get the party excited to start a new thread. All I see is some one resisting every suggestion. I've clearly led the horse to the stream. I have some coins on the way but will wait for their arrival and my photos to add to your new thread.
I love primarily world coins of the 20th century. I don't think 1939 or whatever is a good cutoff point for "most" collectors. That's pretty arbitrary considering: newfoundland coins of the 40s; scarce Biafra coins; all the beautiful issues from France, Italy, Poland, Canada, the Middle East, Latin America, etc. etc. since the 40s; scarcer Great Britain coins like the 1951 large penny; low mintage, high graders like Netherlands larger denominations or Netherlands Antilles; FAO coin series; etc!! The list could go on forever in my eyes. Sure, maybe these coins don't pull prices like classic US coins (overpriced in my opinion), but judging from the activity on eBay and talking to other collectors of all these issues tells you something else. I probably love these modern coins because they are so available and affordable. Regardless, I think there's much to appreciate from the artistry involved, variety, and lower relative mintages. They also have interesting histories if you're willing to look.
I don't deny that some of them are rare, the proof Australia penny coins from the late 1950s for instance. And in all fairness there are a few I like.
There is the faint trace of a fingerprint in the field around 4:00 obverse, but that might have belonged to Farouk for all I know. Agree, very high-end for the grade.
Bought this from a "50 Cents each" bin at the coin show this weekend. Just loved the Honeybee on the reverse. 1929 Italy 10 Centesimi (bronze) Also picked up these Cuban Republic coins from the same bin, just because. 1916 Republic of Cuba 1 and 2 Centavo coins (Nickel-copper). Rob
I collect the whole date set of Italy bees....I still need the 1919. they run from 1919-1937 I have the 1928 and 1932 semi key dates. 1920-1932 I have. I do collect Cuban star coins mainly for my "coins with star" section.
Same coin as before with better white balance, also puts this thread ahead of that "pretender" thread that includes the word "ancients" in it(!)
Hahaha..."pretender" thread. I think you're going to have a hard time ousting a thread with 5000+ posts and over 230,000 views...but good luck. I personally still think the other thread is fine, and it's nicer to have things all in that one place than splintered over here.
Wow that coin is in amazing condition. Very nice. I don't know what the quadrigo bigosa collection thing is but I like that design. Italy also has tons of other beauties that came after as well. I don't know why people overlook and write off modern worlds , even the basemetal ones. The designs are just amazing to me
Actually, that's a silver coin, and probably an MS66 or MS67. Nice one "Fred"! Certainly nicer than my mere MS63.
