I've come across a 1974 Jefferson nickle with a V stamped in Jefferson's head and again on the reverse side. Haven't been able to find any information on this. Has anyone seen this before?

I can't see your scan, but I'm guessing that it is PMD.

Yeah. Someone just testing a "V" punch on the coin. It's a two page PDF file that needs to be downloaded to see the pics.

    Why?

Why can't folks just post the pictures?

Technically they did post pictures, they're just not embedded in the format commonly used by regular members here and which you have grown accustomed to.

Also, Because (.pdf) was probably the default file type (or last used file type) on the scanner they used to image the coin with that's what we got.

PDFs are widely known and accepted as a file type that anyone can share and open on different platforms and devices. It's very convenient for people who don't know equipment and the difference between different image file types and when to use them. Similarly a new member may not know the ropes of the forum and how other users use this site, so when a pdf file is accepted by the site, up it goes. In this case it was in one fell swoop, a convenient two pages at once-- a minimum of effort to locate the files and select them for the post.

It really only took two clicks to down load the file, open it and quickly determine what the others simply assumed by the description provided by the OP, which was a correct guess; PMD.

Hi fplucc. If you see PMD being mentioned it simply means Post Mint Damage. Not an error coin.
