Thanks for the nice coin-compliments, gang ... Yah, I really do love this new coin ... and I definitely agree with AJ => some coins actually "speak to ya, eh?" ... Ummm sure, this one may have been speakin' Spanish, but I still kinda understood what it was trying to say to me ... => Comprar, estúpido persona quiere que me!! Oh, and another very cool thing about this awesome new coin is => I bought it from one of my favourite sellers => a dude from "Spain" (it's home-grown!!)
I liked Steve's OP but Cucumbor's coin with legend and the hand (not to mention the opener!) is a really great coin. Mine is very different with the super regular flan but weak strike.
Maybe, but 13 to 15 grams seems normal for the small denomination. Bing's, at 25 is obviously a double. Or maybe his is a unit and yours are halves? Does anyone know the breakdown on these?
I haven't read any specific references for these, but I always see them described as AE Unit despite the great variance in weight. 13-17g seems to be the most common weight range. There also doesn't seem to be any consistency in the dating, and I've seen everything from late 3rd to early 1st century BC. My guess would be that they were struck over a period of time and while the designs stayed the same, the weight standard may have changed (decreased)? There's also a wide range of weights and sizes for the bull types like the one below commonly called AE Semis. Mine at 5g would seem to be closer to the average, but I've seen 13-14g as well.
How are you on the computer at 10 pm your time? Anyways, nice piece Steve, I'll slap down a like for ya'. (oh wait you broke 10k likes)
It was 11 my time, I was taking a break from drafting a 7 paragraph email. Oh, and I'm on a tablet as well.
Nice! How about a bull with a chick on it then? CASTULO AE As 11.71g, 27mm Early 1st Century BC SNG Cop. 223; SNG BM Spain 1394; Villaronga CNH 339; Burgos 120/906. O: L Q V F Q ISC F, male head left. R: MCF, Europa, cloak billowing over her head, riding bull right.
