But you're absolutely right, that one was a little too good. This Diocletian ought to make up for it.

    Pretty ugly bunch.
The one here is an eastern competitor. Standing king/sitting goddess type.

That is very cool that you tossed an ancient in to the fountain. I wonder when the last ancient before yours went in??

I love this thread-- the Ancients version of a lowball set!

Most of the handful of uncleaned coins purchased when I first started collecting would feel at home here. A few mixed lot coins would too.

Here's a mixed lot ugly. It's just ordinary ugly though, not as spectacular as many of the glorious atrocities shown here. Vespasian dupondius, Fides standing.

And a Nerva dupondious, also from a mixed lot. Nerva sees you staring at his neck wound and wishes you would look away.

This is ugly even for me, but its still very rare and was able to pick it up at a reasonable price as far as these go. Can anyone figure out what it is?

I liked the idea of the coin taking a nearly 2,000 year long trip around the world and finding its way back to Rome. Of the coins that get tossed into the Fountain annually, 700k Euros worth is usable and gets sorted and collected for charity. Mine wouldn't be one of those :D... who knows where it is now.

Wow, you guys have worse taste than I do. That's impressive. Here's a compendium of some of my roughest coins - most selected by rarity. But fourees and limes denarii can look pretty harsh, just by nature. And lead tesserae never look "beautiful" even on a good day...

I no longer have access to the ancient coin so pictures are not an option. The poor coin is in an unmarked grave outside my house.

You can probably imagine this one in your mind’s eye so no photo is necessary. Imagine that someone had a 4th Century AE4 in about the worst possible condition including leprosy (BD). You can turn away now before I finish the description.....

Someone subsequently performed a brick-cleaning. All that succeeded in doing was to give a bright shiny appearance to the areas that were not either gone or green. It was so horrible that I actually buried it.
