GD, What do you know about PKOK Ike Dollars?

GD - Since you are near the Salt Lake City area, I wonder if you have any information you can share with us (that you know) about the PKOK Ike Dollar Hoard. I read about this on another forum, and the story behind it is interesting, but, I guess, unproven.

Here's a short version based on my understanding:

    1. "PKOK Ikes" come from a hoard of Ike dollars which have distinctive toning which is highly prized by certain collectors, bringing remarkable premiums.

    2. They are rumored to have orginated by a bank employee who inserted various Ike dollars (business strikes, clad proofs, silver proofs, and silver BUs) in cardboard holders originnally meant for Morgan Dollars to be given away as a promotion for a Salt Lake City bank.

    3. The toning is rumored to have resulted from the holders, or a combination of the holders and improper storage in a moist, sulfer-rich basement. Others allege the coins were "cooked" or chemically treated to result in the wild PKOK Ike toning.

    4. The exact story is shrouded in mystery, which is probably why the PKOK Ikes carry such large premiums. Many were slabbed by PCGS, but I'm not sure if they still slab them. None of these bank promotion holders (or very few) have surfaced, which casts doubt on the story, or suggests that the "creator" takes a few out every once in a while but keeps or destroys the holders.

    Fun Stuff!!

By the way, It seems that PCGS will slab a coin that is proven to result from a gradual toning process (such as these Ikes and the "electric blue" proof Jefferson nickels) even if it resulted from something like improper storage (which was the case with the nickels). Otherwise such colors would likely be bagged as AT (artifical toning).

Well all I can say is this - I aint talkin :D

OK - enough of the jokes  Quite seriously - the only place I have ever heard the story is on the PCGS boards. Yeah I used to hang out there - but it kinda wore on me. Only place I visit there on a regular basis any more is the world forum. Anyway - I've been here in SLC since '82 - and until I read about the peacock colored Ikes ( no idea how they got PKOK from that ) on the PCGS forum - I had never of them. Seen them yes - but heard that story - no. And I never heard of them being called that either.

It does make me wonder though how these stories get started. Perhaps there is a grain of truth - perhaps not. But one thing is for sure - a good story will absolutely sell coins !! Take the wildly toned nickels from a hoard discovered in W.Va. ( I was raised in that part of the country ) I think it was. Those nickels have very distinctive toning - drop dead gorgeous every one. And they often sell for 10X list  And the number of them was supposedly limited. But there are just as many folks who think that batch of nickels was AT as there are who think the PKOK Ikes are AT - and of course an equal number who think both are NT. But are they ? Well - like I said before -

    I aint talkin :D :D

Thanks, GD. Have you ever seen one of the bank promotion holders? Some of the PCGS stories suggest one or two SLC dealers might have them.

I have not. I've been in every shop there is here in SLC more times than I can count - but I've never seen one. That doesn't they don't any - it just means they don't have them on display and I have never asked. But I will ask ;)

Also - there is a show coming up in about 2 weeks - I'll check then as well.

    Doug,

You are correct about the Appalachian Toned War Nickels. I should know, I own four of them. At this point, I think most believe that the Appalachians are AT, but I don't really care, they are absolutely gorgeous.
