Hey everyone! LCS asked me to post these here and see if any CB Quarter experts recognize what's going on with this quarter. Photos aren't mine, but I did my best to make them more palatable to you guys. From what I can see, there is a die clash on the obverse by Liberty's cheek/ear line, plus a die crack running along the base of the bust through the last star on the right. Not sure if it's a scratch or a die crack on the lower left of the bust. Coin weighs 6.7 grams and has a die rotation of about 45 degrees (their estimate.) It passes the magnet test. Thank you in advance!
My guess would be a die clash that broke the obverse die. Evidence of the shield beneath her ear. That, and a harsh cleaning years ago, most likely because the coin was black and in danger of becoming corroded, so a harsh clean had to be performed to save it.
Next you're gonna tell me about the die crack...lol I'm pretty happy that I guessed what was going on with it from their description over the phone. Too bad it isn't a rare variety, though...would have been fun to find something cool.
1834 B-1 late die state obverse, final die state reverse; severe die rotation is normal for this die marriage. This reverse is typically called the O Over F, also FS-25-1834-901 in cherry picker's, but it's not a rare variety despite what is indicated. The reverse master hub was unique to this and the 1833 B-2. The eagle is quite distinct from the other reverses in this series and the shield only has two lines per stripe instead of the typical three.
