Didn't they find the coin on the *surface* (within a few inches)... in the swamp?

I think the diver came up with it, but yes, in very shallow waters.

I saw the first season and was interested but very skeptical. I'm living over here in the UK and I don't even know if they get the History channel. I would watch it because it did entertain me previously.

Not the case. This thread is now #26 most viewed out of 31,112 total threads in Coin Chat. There may be not many people posting here about it, but the show sure is popular.

They found another Spanish coin last episode. Next episode preview says they find a British coin and....gold!

Though the island and the mystery surrounds it is fascinating... We must all sit back a moment and really think about what the show is presenting us as 'evidence'.

Finding a coin (or two) that predates the assumed 'Money Pit' creation is not evidential proof of the makers of the pit. Yes.. It is a coin from 1652... How many years did it take to make its way to North America... When was it dropped? Literally, anytime after 1652... It could have as easily been a pocket piece (good luck charm) carried by any one of the hundreds that have visited the island looking for treasure.

One example I would use is this... I've seen a few people in North Carolina discover Hammered Coins from England that date to 1300 - 1500AD. Does this offer proof that the English were here earlier than the records show? No... More than likely, someone dropped it or lost it much later.. much closer to modern times.

Though I enjoy the show... And the mystery is one I continue to follow.. I think the guys are really reaching. I'm not convinced that the coin(s) they've discovered prove anything at this point.

Find that coin 140 Feet down in the pit... THEN I'll be a believer.

Also we're assuming they actually found it instead of it being planted to make it look like it was discovered. Like that show Hot Shots that is or was on the History channel. Those people shooting would have to miss shots on purpose as part of the story line.

I think that the writers are not so good. Besides the excellent points BostonCoins made about the coin, the writers choose to fill in the lack of information by repeating exactly the same words they use in every show, after every commercial, and more times in between.

If we were to subtract all of that repeat material, the show would last about 10 minutes, max. Jeez, they are worse than Wolf Blitzer, repeating everything millions of time, ad infinitum.

I was amazed when they said 3 Carthage coins were found on the Island. I had no idea about it.

For all those who like the show, there will be a new season (3rd season), coming up November 10th.

Are they ever going to find anything? I like the show, but it moves pretty slow and the rehash things over and over again. Seems like if they actually found anything spectacular it would be all over the news.

I think the entire plan was to make money from the show, not really finding anything. Oak island has undergone so many big dollar searches over the years that the small efforts they make are highly unlikely to turn up anything.

Another Geraldo Rivera opens Al Capone’s vault! I will say I did watch about 2 episodes and lost interest as it seemed a bit overly dramatic.

I too tried to watch this show as I have followed the Oak Island saga since the very early '70's but it moves just too damned slow for me and I get bored. I read about it first in a treasure magazine.

I do a little "dirt fishing" once in a while and have had it happen to me more than once. It's called the "halo effect"= atomic sized particles are shed as metal corrodes creating a donut shaped ring around a buried coin which remains if the coin's retrieved using a screwdriver method. I come along now and get a signal and dig it with a shovel which breaks the "ring "up and POOF it's gone!

Spanish money was used in most of N.America before the Revolution(1776) along with British/French/Dutch and whatever was available/accepted.I have a "1736 half reale" coin that was used to pay the tolls on the Mass. Turnpike, the first toll road in the us.I just got a 1737 -8 Reales Pillar Dollar last week in Astoria Or. so they got around in trade!

I'm obsessed with the show and the new season starts November 10th. I totally agree with ken454 that they drag this out forever. Should have used some TNT to bring something to the surface or at least one of those monster shovels that they use for mining.

Spanish money was legal tender in the USA until 1857.
