I posted this penny in the What it's Worth section and still have no clue as to what this might be. There's a small crater underneath the date with the D still intact inside. I tried to do some research on it but couldn't find anything. I was just wondering if this was an error of some kind or done post mint. Any help would be kindly appreciated. Thank you.
I have seen that may times on early zinc cents on one part of the coin or another and it just the zinc rotting beneath the plating and the plating has sunk into the area of the rot.
Zinc rot for sure, about 3/4 of 83P&D thur1988,are like that,a nice MS65-67 is what rare!! Plus the DDO&DDR
I believe they are incorrect. I found one identical to you're coin. The odds, of them both rotting in same place are astronomical.
Wrong. The most common place for pre 1990 zinc cents to rot is around the mintmark. Because the mintmark is hand struck into the working die it is often higher relief than the rest of the coin, leading to more chances of the copper plate splitting at that point. Once there is a split in the plating to allow the atmosphere in the zinc rot begins. I have seen many cents with the rot around the mintmark, several so bad that the mintmark actually fell off the coin.
When did they start putting the mint mark on the same die. I was told they were done Separately.I'm a amateur AT this so excuse me if needed
Prior to 1990 the mintmark was hand applied to the working die using a punch. After 1990 the die was included in the master die. The mintmark is not applied to the coin separately in either instance.
Absolutely nothing in the minting process could account for what appears on this coin and since that is the case, it's Post Minting Damage which, while interesting to look at, renders the piece useless. Whether it's rot, rheumatism, arthritis, or an ancient volcanic caldera, it's nothing more than a "roll" filler since, by itself, it has no monetary value and with most certainty, no numismatic value.
Very old post and in ten yers you can not see that the coin posted was cleaned and accelerate the zinc oxides?.
