I'm considering buying this coin, on the obverse there are straight scratches, like it has been possibly whizzed, and overall looks cleaned, which i know will lower its value. would this be worth even making an offer on? it is a 1316 A.H. 1 Rupee, Afghanistan. I'm looking for a large 5 rupee in silver, but may settle for this one for now.
Based upon how the strike interacts with the cuts, I would say PMD as well sir. Also, it looks to have been cleaned extensively. Unless it is your only choice as a hole filler, I would wait.
Please explain how you determined PMD as opposed to being struck on a filed flan (pre-mint damage?). I am not disagreeing but I believe this thread would benefit from everyone knowing this detail. The $10 million dollar 1794 dollar has file marks, for example. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...tches-record-10-million-auction-New-York.html
The denticles, which are usually a high point in a design so therefor will usually overstrike any flan issues, all have the striation marks through them. Normally on a filed flan you will see the striations on the lower relief devices, (not enough metal displaced to override the striation marks), but the striation marks are obliterated on the high points of the design. Since it appears every mark is running through the denticles, that is why I said it appears it was PMD and not something that came from the mint that way.
