I was told to save all the 1970 thru 1969 nickels. I was also told that I can sell them and make some money on them. Is this TRUE??? I just stated to go thru bank boxes and I find tons of 1964 and 1962 and 1963 nickels. Thanks
Nope, get a coin book and look at mintage...these are quite common. However if one was say MS67 or better, then yes but it is so hard to get one that good.
Shouldn't that be 1969-1970 instead of the other way around? And, was the person telling you this someone that had them for sale?? Now, a little clarification. Untampered with, original bank rolls from 1969 or 1970 might gain some appreciable premiums but the absolutely have to be original and not "put together" rolls.
About 10 to 12 years ago that might have been true. At that time nickel was over $20 a pound and the nickel in each coin was worth over 20 cents each plus the value of the copper. Today nickel and copper are much lower and melting nickels is now illegal. Or they could have been talking about Canadian nickels which were pure nickel during that period and are still worth considerably more than face value today even with the lower nickel prices.
considering the stability, or lack thereof, these days in the banking system, in the event of a collapse, you'd have your nickels at home, all warm, safe and sound.
