I've seen the advertisements for the movies, but I've never seen any of them. I guess I DO need to get out more.
Aahaha, yah, it must be us, JA? => ummm Harry Potter? (really? is that the next step to big-life?) ... grow up, home-boy ... "Voldemort Rocks"

Lot came in and after soaking for close to a day, I am hoping the late Roman makes this worth the $19-something I paid for it, because there's a chance IMO it could be a rare Zeno type from Constantinople. The Carausius/Allectus turned out to be either Maximianus or Diocletian (I am leaning towards Max).
I recently read an article on coinage of Samosata in northern Roman Syria, now in eastern Turkey but submerged under the waters of the Ataturk Dam on the Euphrates. Most coins from Samosata are from the reign of Philip I (244-249). Philip I, 31 mm. 23.01 grams. Reverse: City goddess seated left on rocks. Pegasus flying left below the river goddess. Philip I, 31 mm. 16. 55 grams. Philip II, 29 mm. 17.31 grams. The last one above has clear reverse legend CAMOCATEON "of Samosata" in Greek and probably struck for Samosata at the Antioch mint. The previous ones were probably struck "locally" at Samosata itself and style the city as "metropolis" (of Commagene - KOM). Three big coins cost altogether $30 including shipping.
those are cool for 10 bucks a pop. if you got those off ebay recently...I almost went for them. glad they have a good home.
Yes, I got them on eBay. A while back I started a thread https://www.cointalk.com/threads/do-you-have-a-rare-ancient-coin.254391/ on rare coins with a coin I thought was from Antioch. Later I noted on that thread I found out it was attributed to Phillipopolis (in southern Roman Syria) but shared dies with coins of Antioch. An article, by Kevin Butcher, said both cities shared dies with coins attributed to Samosata, which also shared dies with coins of Zeugma. Anyway, I thought i would pick up a few coins from those cities, and right away those three appeared on eBay. I won them, they arrived today, and I posted them here (instead of on that other thread) because of the low price.
well, i didn't have the heart to put this in the ugly thread. it's better lookin in hand than in pic. it looks shiny because i gave it a coat of verdi-care. it had some spots i wanted to clean up a bit, looks better now. the pores have some light colored hard stuff in it, the flash from my camera makes them really show up in the pic...also less noticeable in hand. a nice chunky coin...also feels nice in hand. anyway, does fit the "barrel scraper" thread, coming in at under 25 bucks with shipping. so i'll post it here. Ptolemy VI, Philometor 180-145 BC, O: Head of Isis (or Cleopatra I as Isis?) R: PTOLEMAIOU BASILEWS, eagle standing left, wing open, on thunderbolt. Pi over alpha in left field. Svoronos 1384 27mm 16.8g philometor means "he loved his mother", cleopatra i. some sources have her as being on the obverse as isis, i'm not sure. interesting note: he also "loved" his sister, married her and had several kids with her. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemy_VI_Philometor
Chris, that's a great find for under 25, despite the contusions on the obverse - they aren't in a prime focal area. If they were on her face, I would have passed. But detailed busts of Cleopatra as Isis are very popular, and don't come cheap. You get a steal on that one.
