    Hello everyone,
    I've been collecting very casually cleaned and id-ed denarii so I rarely needed any help. Up until now: I've gotten some uncleaned coins and I'm enjoying working on them a lot, but there's a coin I can't figure out the name.

    I guess it's a half-follis of... Valentinian?
    Mintmark: TES, so Thessalonica?.
    Thanks!

    My guess is:

    RIC 16a,Gamma Thessalonica

    Valentinian I AE3. 364 AD. D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right / GLORIA ROMANORVM, Emperor walking right, head left, holding labarum & grasping bound captive at the top of the head, TESG in ex.

    Great. Thanks!

    I found some similar coins of Valentinian II, but judging by the fibula and the diadem Bing seems to be right.

    No, I just didn't want to create a new thread for each coin. Should I do that?

    I can't tell. It looks like N to me, but it can be H or A.

    It makes things easier to follow if each coin has its own thread.

    Hey dawg => if you have a cool new coin, then definitely create a new thread!! (yah, we're lonely on this site => we need some more cool ancient coin-threads)

    Cheers, new brother

    => bring-on the coin threads!!

    I think I may have made a mistake on the original coin. I now believe it to be
    RIC IX Thessalonica 26a, type xvii-unlisted. According to Helvetica's list, this is a rare variation, but I do not think that translates into this coin being worth more or less.

    Thanks. I was going to keep it anyway since I don't have any coins of Valentinian I (at least until a better one turns up).
