Lol, YES!. I ignore all those threads. If someone wants an opinion thats one thing, but as a game, annoying.

Yes. The special issues are usually available in high grade. If you're talking ASE's, commems, and the like most will be readily available in MS-69.

But it is quite the opposite with coins made for circulation. Collectors in the old days weren't much concerned with the quality of their Unc Barber dimes because almost all of them looked pretty good. A few were made with worn or tired dies and some were poorly struck but generally they were all nice and the only consideration was whether they had wear or not.

This is not at all true with coins made for circulation since 1964. The bulk of these coins looked like garbage when they left the dies and they looked even worse after being mishandled by the mint and FED. By the time you saw a "BU Roll" it was ugly. Many of the moderns made for circulation are scarce in nice attractive condition. Even a nice well-struck 1982-P quarter is quite scarce and it looks common only because the services don't factor in die condition and strike in the most grades.

You'll find many moderns are highly elusive in true MS-65. Even coins that seem common like an '84-P cent may exist in numbers under a dozen in true Gem with a solid strike and nice pleasing surfaces. Only one coin in about 1000 mint sets even approach being this quality. Finding rolls of this date is far more difficult than you imagine and the coins in them will be far lower quality than you think possible.

This came to be because nobody collected moderns and nobody even looked at them. The mint wasn't trying to please any customers because they had no customers.

I've never heard anyone say how easy high grades are who has actually tried to make a collection of any of the circulation issues. Sure, a nice Gem '72-D quarter isn't tough but many dates are tough and some are scarce.

This is exactly what makes these coins so interesting to those very few of us who actually collect them.

    Jeesh.

I missed this post somehow before my last response. You really said everything that needs to be said in a lot fewer words.

Moderns of all series are a hoot to collect because they are so elusive in nice condition. They aren't only elusive in attractive Unc but they can even be elusive in attractive condition down to VF. If you don't believe it try finding a nice '69 quarter in any grade at all. Most of the heavily worn pieces are culls now days.

I just switched to chrome and this software is weird.

I didn't see this post until after my last one either.

My echo has an earlier time stamp!!!

Please quit posting what I'm about to post.

Anything with a mintage over about 6000 is boring, with few exceptions.

I have to totally disagree. If less than 6000 folks like it, it is a dud!!!!

A chain cent with a mintage of 36103 not boring to me nor is a 1796 quarter with a mintage of 6146 nor a 1795 flowing hair dollar with a big mintage of 160295. All 3 are coins that would THRILL me to own!! Most early coins that I love have mintages over 100k or more just a low survival rate especially in original condition and high demand

I highly suggest patterns if mintage is this important to you.

Just came on after a few days. There are some great responses here! I agree with a lot said, namely how uninteresting ASEs are, minor error collecting, ANA drama, and several other things. I'll have to come back on just to read the rest I couldn't finish right now

What about a US silver 3 cent with a mintage of 10k? If it grades good or vg clean, with no problems, wouldn't this be a rare coin considering low starting mintage, the many years that have passed, and how few survive from this year without problems? What say you?

I see your point, but don't you kind of feel like you're picking at straws here? Sure, there may be only a handful of some US moderns in near perfect condition, but no one really cares. I see late 70s, 80s, etc quarters graded MS66 not selling for much. I question whether such gems are indeed rare, or maybe it's just demand is so low. In any case, I don't see collector interest in MS65s and above vs MS 63s or even plain Uncs growing. In other words, I hope interest in super Uncs wanes. The price disparities are nuts. I think a far more interesting and safer bet is modern world coins in any UNc condition. The base metal coins have probably been overlooked in a lot of cases, and I think you can already find some cases of this.
