Dansco 7070 question

    Random thought of the day...

What's the point of the 4 commemorative half dollar holes in the Dansco 7070 Type Set album? I don't know much if anything about them, but I assume there are significantly more "types" of comm halfs than 4. Also, aren't there other denominations of comms other than half dollar (if so why aren't they given a few holes to fill)? Comms aren't meant for circulation, but all the other coins in the album are (if I am not mistaken).

Just seems odd. They could have used that space to include other coins such as a few more varieties of the liberty seated coins (i.e. drapery, no drapery) or large cents for example.

Just a place to put a few. If you are a serious commemorative collector, they have other albums for that.

Which makes no sense, in my mind.

If you want space for all commemoratives, buy the commemorative album. I guess the thinking was most collectors have a few of these they wanted to display.

My first post was about how leaving a few spaces for random comm halfs in a Type Set album of circulated coins makes no sense. Would make much more sense to put your few comms that you have in the extra holes at the end of a Franklin half album, for example.

Many things in numismatics make no sense. It was probably more a matter of they had some extra space and flipped a coin (a commemorative coin) to determine what to put there.

They needed something to fill the page.

Pffff. Not buying it. Plenty of "real" types/varieties that could have been put in the extra space.

When choosing a type set album I went with the Intercept Shield album. It's nice, it has more up to date options. It still has four commemorative halves, still not sure why, but you can pick and choose your favorites. Here are some pictures of my album. It would be nice if they had a No Stars Dime and Half Dime slot, but neither do.

    On that same page❓

Doesn't necessarily need to be on the same page. Things could be shifted from one page to the other. Currently the half dollars are split between two pages, so other denominations can be shifted/split if necessary.

At the time it did matter. Sure they could change every page but that was not a good idea at the time.

Yeah, but those are the pricey coins that most do not put in album holes.

Thanks for your thoughts gentlemen, but no one has yet provided a truly good reason imho.

There are 3 holes for libery seated dimes and 3 for liberty seated half dimes. There are 5 varieties of LS dimes and 4 of LS half dimes that are equally affordable that could (should) have been included. And that doesn't even include the darpery/non drapery minor varieties.

Beating a dead horse obviously :D

You should contact Dansco. I hear they're real receptive to suggestions.

I wonder why Dansco has been so slow in making the replacement for the 7070?

I don't want to change things I just wanted to know why they did what they did. No good reasons have been mentioned hear imho.

This is how I personally view the holes in the album. To me commemorative halves are still halves. They are still technically a "type" of US coin. A lot of collectors of US Type coins also have laying around a commemorative or two. Not enough to fill an album by itself and no interest to do so anyways. Rather than being lost in the shuffle, put it in the album. I like this because it also me to "personalize" my type set by adding in the commemorative halves that pertain to me such as halves commemorating my home state, etc.

I also agree that adding the other types you mentioned would make sense, but you said you aren't looking for change just wondering what others are thinking.

I think they just had room for four halves after they put what they wanted on the special page so they filled in with four commemorative halves. No conspiracy just taking up all available space.

Did you find a fix for the Braided Hair large cent problem?
