Hi all. I have limited experience grading early coinage. I venture a guess of VF30, but welcome insight into other opinions and why you feel that way. Also, the toning seems to enhance the eye appeal to me. What are your opinions? Thanks for your time.
VF20: Light to moderate wear evident, but all major features sharp Obverse More than half of hair details show? YES Lower curls and drapery worn, bold? {NO?} Ear, clasp, and LIBERTY fully visible? YES, but on "LIBERTY" only Reverse Wear apparent on eagle's head, leg w/ some feathers visible? Barely Most wing details clear (but not on weak strikes) NO (weak strike?) Motto is complete? NO (90%, but not all there) Talons are separated? NO (right talon is sort of; left, not at all) I am a novice, but by those standards, I'd put it at F-12.
F12: Moderate to heavy wear present, but design elements are clear and bold. Obverse About half of details evident in hair, cap, and drapery Parts of ear and clasp are visible Eyelid is flat All letters in "LIBERTY" visible Parts of rim are worn flat Reverse Half of eagle's wing feathers visible Head is almost smooth Eye, some head feathers show. Motto letters clear, weak. Maybe F-15? More than ready to be corrected by my elders...
Not a bad looking coin to me. That's a die crack from the edge going up the 7. The crack was probably very bold at one time.
When you click on my image to enlarge it, you can also make out what appears to be the bottom loop of the number 3, directly above the 3 in the date. Trying to look up the JR#, but I haven't seen that any of the 4 known varieties are a match
