Must have been a long time since you bought from the mint. Most, if not all, do not decline in value these days.

fair enough I would definitely agree there. buffett had the best idea for congress. no one can be reelected without a balanced budget. I agree with him that it would take about 5 minutes after that to get a solution.

the only reason I leapt to defend the feds is that we are talking about nonelected nonpolitical appointments. unless I'm mistaken the director of the marshals is usually not a campaign contributor. but I'm totally on board with you as far as the elected officials go.

Update: Apparently the coins were sold, not presented to USMS employees. The claim is as follows:

Drew J. Wade, chief of public affairs for the United States Marshals Service, said Oct. 17, “Early purchasers may not personally financially profit by receipt of payments for loan or use of the coins during the 225th period.

Whatever the heck that means. Does that say they can't sell the coins?

After the 225th celebration year, recipients can do as they please. The article said the pedigree acknowledged on these coins should cause them to increase in value substantially. Of course all the high ranking officials got theirs graded by NGC already. I'm not so sure loan or use restrictions also include selling the item. A good lawyer would have some fun with this wording. They could always do a pre-sale to a large dealer or major collector ahead of time.

I do not see anything in the wording of the Public Law 112-104 which strictly forbids the resale of items received, whether by award or as purchased, which obviously some were. I expect that this is a Policy of the US Marshals Service which could possibly be challenged in court but then who is going to risk their job over a couple of hundred bucks.

As for the 2 sets which were submitted to NGC, I wasn't there and really do not know how these two individuals received them. I only know that these two were instrumental in getting the coins done in the first place. For that, I would expect that they were awarded.

Other than that, I really don't care but I do have a strong dislike of sensationalistic journalism.

A couple hundred bucks? There are nuts out there that will pay big bucks for that label. Hope the rest of the EE's that bought the sets have them graded as well.

The latest online edition of Coin World has the specifics on what was sold/purchased. Specifically, only 35 Proof Examples of each of the three commemorative coin denominations was made available. Only 16 each of the three denominations have been purchased and the USMS will buy the remaining 19.

The celebration period runs until Dec 31, 2015 to which the USMS said that none of the coins purchased can be sold for personal financial gain during that period.

So, it looks like none of these would hit the market for another 14 months.
