possible error or silver proof

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by medinight1958@gmail. com, Oct 19, 2014.

  1. I found a chickasaw quarter without the copper strip on the side. I got excited thinking it was a s mint but it has a d stamp on it. Is this part of a proof set or a error?

Most likely it's been plated. Pics would help. Also, have you weighed it?

For some reason, people keep selling (and buying) platinum-plated sets of state quarters. Eventually, someone realizes that they don't have any actual additional value, and spends them. Don't know if that's what you have, but it's possible.

It's also possible for the clad layer to be dragged down the edge during striking, so that you don't see the copper layer. I'm not sure I've ever come across this myself, but I've seen others report it.

IMHO....I get ALOT of "offers" for colorized, "gold"-plated or otherwise changed coins from various companies. I NEVER entertain the thought of making a purchase. These treatments don't add any value, and may in-fact destroy any future value they may have. I am now even seeing currency being treated as such! Maybe I should mail the materials back to them and tell them I am a serious collector! FYI...I am not a professional numismatist, but still consider myself to be one after almost 50 years of self-education in the field. However, I do mainly stay within the realm of modern and 19th century coinage, so maybe I am undeserving of my self-title!

I commented on your first paragraph, but forgot to AGREE with the second one!

I have looked around and havent seen any pics of what I hope is a error coin worth keeping and not a coin that came out of some "limited edition" set. I hope this image helps eveyone. This is a 2010 P state quarter No copper visible. The redish reflection you see is a Target bag nearby. It is lighter than a normal coin,it does not have a frost like finish or brilliant look. Or a gem like appearence it looks like a regular coin except the lack of copper layer that is normally visible on clad coins. Hope this helps.

I assume you mean "lighter in color", not "lighter in weight". Can you weigh the coin? Is it attracted to a magnet?

It's possible that it was struck on the wrong kind of planchet, but much more likely that it's plated with something. Getting an accurate weight (to within 1/10 gram) would help to narrow the possibilities.

Looks to have been plated... Or "layered" as the TV hucksters like to call it.
