Hi everyone, I have no clue on numismatic although I used to collect coins and paper money from around the world when I was a kid (but they had no real value, except face value). Today my father in law gave me 1796 U.S. coin. As you can see, there is no denomination on it, so I am not even sure if it's a quarter or 10c. Let alone the possible market value, if any at all, considering that the side with the eagle is not in good conditions, as you can see from the pictures. He asked me to find out, and that's how I ended up here. Thanks for helping me here, sure I appreciate it a lot!
I'm thinking it isn't real. All the photos of authentic half dimes, dimes and quarters look very different.
It sticks to the (fridge) magnet, just as you thought... I didn't know it was supposed to be silver, but the magnet obviously proves it's not silver. Case closed, unfortunately, I suppose. I can only thank you all for the prompt reply, despite the fact that the outcome is far from being what I hope it would be!

You guys are a great bunch, I was not expecting this, honestly. If I will consider picking this beautiful hobby up, you guys surely would be a major factor in such decision. I'm humbled. PS: I'm an aviator and always loved the F-14, hence the choice of the patch
