Ancients => a knob trying to make sense of the confusing Greek denominations

Hey, I realize that I'm not Doug Smith, Martin or Batman, but every now and then I trick myself into thinking that I know a bit about this "stuff" ...

arrrgghhh, but then I decided to make a thread show-casing all of the different Greek silver denominations ... yah, and then I realized that either:

a) the dudes that I bought these coins from didn't know "much",

b) the denominations might change slightly throughout the Greek empire?

You ancient guys always intrigue me.

 

While you mention several standards that were in effect, there were others and changes. 'Stater' in particular meant little more than 'standard unit coin' as later the Romans did with 'Follis'. They may have been careful to abide by their standards but that does not mean that they used the same set as the next town over or ten years earlier. Consider also how many times the US has changed standards since 1793 (221 years) and we can't be too hard on various Greek cities for changing things between 600BC and 200 BC when the Romans took over. Remember 'Greece' was not a single country until long after the end of antiquity and each city-state did things their way.
