Jamie, can you get us a closer photo of the obverse? It looks more like damage to the coin than anything, but a closer view would help us figure it out.

Partial missing clad layer, with a weak strike where the layer is missing (because that part of the planchet is thinner than the rest)?

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

    > The correct term is:
    Doubled Die............not double died
    Obverse.............not front
    Reverse............not back

Are we sure this is an error and not post mint damage? It kind of looks like the clad was scraped off.

Just like everything else right? Whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I'm pretty sure that it is authentic.

I appreciate everyone's feed back, but none of it really helps. hahaha

I know NOTHING about coins (I'm not a collector nor do I know any of the correct terms), I actually got this coin when I put a $5.00 bill in the car wash change machine.

I've tried looking it up and have tried emailing pictures to different coin stores BUT NO ONE seems to know exactly what it is.

ANYONE KNOW OR HAVE SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS????

IT'S KILLING ME NOT TO KNOW....

    Thanks,
    Jamie

This is a partial missing clad layer that detached AFTER striking. The layer was there but not bonded when the coin was struck. The piece then broke off leaving the copper layer looking like a weak strike because it was actually struck through the clad layer.
If the piece had not fully detached this would have been considered a "clamshell" error.

    Thanks for replying.......

So what is exactly does that mean?
Does the coin have any value???

the coin definitely has value. how much will only be determined by how much someone is willing to pay. Your best bet is to sell it on Ebay using really good photos and a decent description with a low starting bid and let it roll.

Are you certain it is AFTER, not BEFORE? I think a split planchet after the strike would not leave such detail. That's my guess. I think the thickness on the left half is what caused some lack of detail, the rest of them are all there, as if struck directly.

Remember, yours is not graded and not in a reputable slab.

I took another look on my desktop computer (much larger screen). The lack of detail on the reverse that I couldn't see on the small screen confirms it was missing before the strike, not after....
