Today was a busy day... had my daughter's first Birthday party. Right before bed, I decided to check my email, and saw an email from paypal saying I changed my email address. I logged in, to find an account that had over $3,700 was down to $16! Someone had purchased 5 ebay auctions (not using my ebay account) which mainly was computers, iphones, etc. Paypal was already closed for the day, so I called ebay. ZERO help. I went ahead and changed my passwords, and filed claims on paypal's website. Hopefully that puts a hold on the money. I went to my local police station (at 1 AM!) to file a police report. I have the address the items were being shipped to in Portland, OR. I am wondering if the person is really there, or if the scam is more sophisticated? Possibly not a real address, then they someone file a claim and get the money back? I HOPE paypal gets my money back to me. I also hope this scum gets arrested. It is a Chinese name. Scholes Zhang ZhiXun. very fishy all around. Just had to vent.....

Wait a minute. Why the hell did you have $3700 in your paypal account? keep it at $0 as soon as possible. leaving $3700 in your paypal makes you a hacking target and that's what you have become.

PayPal should be able to get your money back but it will take a week or two maybe more maybe less.

I have 38 more days with Ebay and PayPal and I'm done. Just tired of it all.
Sold all my coins this year except for 18. Taking the proceeds to the January 2015 FUN Show and have some FUN.

jw....good luck getting this corrected, hope they catch and prosecute the thief.

Few years ago it was not a rare thing to get the "sorry, we could not recover your money" letter when you got hacked and money was used for purchases.

Nowadays I`m pretty sure you`ll get the money back as soon as PayPal verifies you were indeed hacked, even if PayPal got to take the loss and the money left the system.

Very sorry to hear of this incident JW . . . as Josh suggested you do, I have always kept my PayPal balance at zero. I transfer all of the funds out every time I record a new sale and prepare the packaging for shipment. This practice can be inconvenient when I have to issue a refund because the account goes negative and freezes up activity until the refund clears my bank, but I've only had that happen 3 or 4 times, and the added layer of security is well worth it to me.

I also do not use on-line banking. Doubtless, the tellers at my bank hate it when I show up in person merely to confirm my balance, and nothing more, but that's the best way to protect myself. I'm sure they think me a troglodyte.

You have my best wishes for a complete recovery of your funds . . . Mike.

Frankly I don't agree with you very often, but you're right on target with that statement. I trust payPoo and fleaBay about as much as the local dogcatcher and politician.

+1. I have no doubt that this will get resolved. It is a scary amount to lose even for a short while, but these dodgy transactions are easy to pick out.

I am always buying and selling, so always have money available to purchase with. I have my account linked to my bank as well, so if I did not have any in there, their purchases would have taken the money from my bank (I believe). How would this have protected me any better?

I wish I knew! I also am now freaked out about what all they might have been able to link. I deleted my bank account and cards from the account, and hopefully they were not able to do anything with those either.

Sounds like you are taking the correct steps. Sorry you are going through this hell. If I lost $370 I would be freaking out, let alone $3700!

Sorry to hear about the hack. Keep us updated on the progress of your claim, it could have been any of us.

I have an account for Ebay at one bank, my regular account at another.
I keep just enough in the account to cover all fees. A few years back I had 2 hack attempts from Europe, Romania, I think. They didn't get through, but I worried about it for a few days.

After all my selling fees are paid in full I'll be closing the Ebay bank account, hopefully by December 1.

I agree with the others that you should get your money back, but if you're like me you're going to worry about it until you see the credit and your money back in the account.

    Again, good luck.

Update- 3 of 5 sellers have responded. 2 have issued a refund.. not sure why the 3rd hasn't yet. Still waiting to hear from 2 more sellers. HOPEFULLY they did not ship.. would hate for them to have to deal with that. My police department filed a report... the police in portland seem to not really care. They have an address for a possible scammer/theft, but too much red tape for them to actually do anything yet.

The police can't do much with this type of stuff. Most of the time they just file a report. Sometimes an officer will go knock on a door but it's tough for them to actually make an arrest.

I might have should have let one item ship, so the police would be able to catch them signing for it. This is a felony crime, and should be taken seriously. Honestly, here in my small town, they would do all they can. It seems like the bigger the town, the less they care.
