One of the HIGH EMPIRE RAREST BRONZES – PLOTINA 112 AD

A special striking on a large flan, struck as a presentation piece

Bronzes in a natural state were found in a remarkable HOARD IN BOLSENA in a volcanic area near ROME IN THE 1890’S.

100 years, two World Wars passed and five generations & the story comes back to life.

Sold in total to one man who passed away pre-maturely, in 1906 the total hoard was sold in auction in Rome. Our luck was 200 coins of the hoard were photographed in their natural untouched state as found.

So many questions not answered. What type of hoard was this – it covered coins in a wonderful state of coins in great preservation from Augusto to Marcus Aurelia nearly 200 years. Did one family keep them, was it a savings hoard or a form of collection? So many questions unanswered, watch this space for a paper to be published.

ANY IDEAS PLEASE WRITE FOR INCLUSION IN A PAPER ON THE HOARD & PLOTINA

:wideyed:Unbelievable, Jeff, this is the best coin of this excessively rare empress I encountered with a wonderful round flan and the find-spot pedigree makes the whole perfect!:wideyed:

Is a book about the hoard comprehending all the photos available?

No but NOMOS ZURICH will write an article detailing amazing facts about this hoard - maybe the father of all High Empire Sestertius Hoards even discovered..........

I'm not sure how to respond. This is a gorgeous, and very rare coin, and I believe there is not a collector amongst us that would not love to have this as their flagship coin. Is this coin currently in a private collection? Obviously, I know nothing about the hoard in question.

Is there a complete list of the coins? If they were all different, then I'd have to go with "collection".

Thanks for the post. I did not see this thread until just now. I think your post bumped it back onto my radar. Here is the description of Plotina from Wikipedia:

Yes I was 'super lucky' to acquire the coin, as mentioned it is a key coin in the collection. She is so wonderful when you have in the hand, it feels like a medalic coin.

I have been collecting Roman Bronzes since 1980, yes 35 years, it has been so difficult to build a collection from the money required and the availability of coins.

Yeah, I was clear on it either. Wonderful coin - way out of my league. I would like to see the reverse.

I'm almost ashamed to post the two latest coins I acquired. Almost, but I will.

It's a gorgeous coin, but posting the obverse only is insufficient to the cause. Let's see the other side.

Plotina was well known for her high moral standards and her kindness, as well as for her support for her husband: she travelled with him to the East and was present at his deathbed. It is said that when Plotina entered the imperial palace after her husband Trajan had become Emperor, she turned to those gathered at the steps and declared...........
