You can buy small bits of gold without breaking the bank. 1/10th oz AGE or Maple Leaf for about $145. Or a gold 5 Peso for around $160 (.12 oz).

My last full sovereign was a Melbourne mint 1899 and I paid $339 (melt was around $310 at the time). So fairly common full sovereigns can be had for a little bit over melt (.23xx oz) and halves at a little higher premium over their melt (half the gold content).

Full (random year, from Apmex on ebay) $317 ish (would likely be a post 1950 issue...my random was 1987)

Half (random modern, Apmex on ebay) $172

For a little more per coin, you can "pick" a year, typically.

This is a 1911 minted in Canada for $357.

You can also buy direct from Apmex, too, and I have. (I mention Apmex here because they are a big player and you know what you get is guaranteed genuine). If they have what you want on their eBay store, the price is basically the credit card price from the direct website, but includes shipping. For cash/wire/check, the direct website is a little cheaper, but then you have to pay shipping unless they are having a special.
