Vic, I understand you're talking featured coins, but they're just the highest graded coins that have been TRU-VIEWED. There are more coins as good or better in all categorys that have not been TRU-VIEWED and are not in Coin Facts.

Dang Vic, you brag about Coin Facts coins and you can't even find them.

Clue: They're right in front of you.....:D....you go find 'em, I know where they are.

Ok I see what you mean. My point is it is on the opening screen

Ok I see how it works thanks for the info. But I'm still going to be happy with my coin at that price with the toning. And if the scratch is actually on the coin back it goes.

And I still maintain that any coin graded at pcgs or ngc would rarely be sold at under grey normal, let alone toned at a show which brings me back to the point of the thread.

I'm glad you're not placing a value anymore on whether a coin shows up in CoinFacts. Good.

And, as you likely understand, not all coins are equal at TPG grade and are not necessarily "good deals". I put that in quotation marks because a "good deal" is a relative term and, in the IHC coin you've just posted, it may not be a "good deal" if it is appropriately priced downward because of its flaws (yet to be verified in hand). Perhaps it is truly a 64 and you've been able to obtain it as a discounted 65 accordingly.

VV - it seems you are grinding an ax and, as GDJMSP stated (and others too), nice coins with nice prices can come from many venues and one is not always better than another. Why is that so difficult to accept?

Because it just has not been my personal experience. I agree people can buy great coins at shows. But it seems to me that the slabbed pcgs and ngc coins are marked up above where the above market value is. I only like to buy nice coins with eye appeal. That is one reason I gravitate towards nicely toned coins. And when buying a nicely toned coin I expect and am ok paying an above market rate price for an average coin in that grade. When I bought and then sold coins from ebay to coin shows I never sold a single coin at grey. Always above. So again I have no problem paying for the quality. My problem is my experience at shows is that most of the slabs are priced above this "above greysheet" level.

Look I'm not the only poster who feels like this

In all fairness maybe I'm just spoiled. I can literally search 150,000 pcgs and ngc coins and compare prices in seconds. I get returns and can spend little time buying coins. Almost all the online coins can be high also but look back to my slq example I keep batting around. I could buy 4 different ms 63 certified nice looking coins for less money then the au 50 and I found the other coins in under a minute.

Maybe us youngsters gen x kids on here Just have a short attention span. Who knows?

Vic, there are still good deals on ebay. I've never disputed that. BUt for every good deal you can find, there are a hundred, maybe a thousand, that are not even close to a good deal. In fact the majority of them are downright ripoffs. And most people who buy there don't have a clue about what they're doing and they overpay far, far, more often than not. That is the problem with ebay.

I think that's what other people are talking about. Think about it for a minute Vic, do you consider the coins you buy the average fare found on ebay ? Be honest, I'm betting you'll have to say no.

Now another question, these coins you buy on ebay, who exactly is it that you are buying them from ?

Now this is the coin you bought and posted about - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1881-1C-PCG...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

It was offered at $1200, you countered, and he accepted your offer. Not that it matters but that is what happened. But who is that guy ? I'd bet ya $100 he's a coin dealer. Just looking at what he has for sale pretty much indicates that - http://www.ebay.com/usr/hcrv22?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

And if that doesn't, looking at his feedback certainly does - http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...sspagename=VIP:feedback&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller

Not that it matters, because it apparently doesn't, but isn't the point of this thread that you can find better deals on ebay than you can from a coin dealer ? Or is it just from coin dealers at shows ?

VV - I'd wager that since your new coin was tru-viewed, it was reholdered from an older PCGS slab and thus it's red designation wasn't revisited. Here's where it sold at Heritage in 2011 where you can find some nice large pics (without the glamor) that could have helped you determine what you were buying. Just some friendly quick internet sourced background info from an old guy:

Nice info. I guess you are one of the few older guys who knows how to program his vcr :shame:.

When you look at the rb numbers you see an average price around $500-$550. For a toned coin like this I'm actually good buying it. It is more of a retail level but I can tell you I actually remember seeing this coin on sale before on ebay even though for some reason I can't find it. I do speficically remember it because of the toning on red slab. I also remember my bid being exceeded at $900. Please don't ask me I just rember it clearly but can't seem to find it on ebay. So I feel good about the price with little concern for overexposure. And if there is that scratch problem well back it goes.

But quite some tech skills from the grown ups. Props.o_O

VV I think most of us believe you when you say you can find nice coins on ebay , but with the lack of quality pics they might be problem coins that will end up costing you a lot of time if not money . It does have some nice Longacre doubling , and though I can't tell if it's a scratch it is on the coin . I don't think I'd of bought this coin .

If I don't like it I throw it back in the mail. I don't see where the problem is.

Me too Rusty as I look at close ups of both the eBay and heritage pics. But then again, I try to look at coins on approval without committing money first. Saves a lot of hassle and helps avoid impulsive buys, but you've got to have a dealer relationship before doing on approval reviews.

Tying up $950 (even setting aside having to ship/insure returns, coin getting lost/stolen in mail, etc.) of my money on a questionable coin would bother me, but I'm small time.....

Bottom line Vic - I've made my points in your thread, don't see what I can add further to dull your ax and so I'm happily done here. I certainly wish you well in your collecting pursuits.

However, I do hope you'll update this thread with your decision on the IHC. My advice is see if you can cancel it now and avoid the trouble.

So you're working with a trusted and venerable dealer my friend? Gosh I love 'old school'. I not being one to go to university (coin talk) I think more then this has rubbed off on me in the few years I've attended these boards. Vic? I like your style and far be it from me to stifle your flair, but 'old school' still rocks with me......
