Well said. Nice and concise. If I can add, you also need a lot of patience looking through those slabs looking for coins you think will make the cross! If a seller does not have close up, well lit, focused pictures, I just pass.

True honestly other than some coins in anacs slabs I won't buy anything but NGC or pcgs slabs without seeing in hand I can trust them to buy sight unseen (tho I need quality pics as I still buy the coin first ) I hAve bought some good coins especially colonials in anacs slabs tho

 

And you won't see all that many PCGS or NGC slabs either.

 

I have a PF-70 coin from SEGS. Care to see it? It is a 1993-S silver 25 Cent piece. I picked it up off of Ebay last month.

So an update to this coin.

I was having a baby so dropping $3200 on this coin wasn't going to happen.

The seller ended up doing what I planned on doing, sent it in to NCS and got it graded by NGC.

Thanks for the update. That's the main reason I pass on TPG's other than the big two. Now, If I can see the coin in hand prior to purchase or they have excellent pictures of the coin, I might take a look. Hairlines are very difficult to see in a photo, so it's still tricky. The above is a perfect example of why a company like SEGS has the reputation it does...

I hadn't seen this thread before, but when I looked at the photos in the original post I thought the rev. had some areas that looked hairlined/scrubbed.

 

Well the fact the coin went from a regular grade slab to a details slab is pretty sorry. I believe in leaving good enough alone.

Now here's an interesting situation. I sold one of my raw coins I gave to SEGS to slab. I then sold the SEGS slabbed coin to some guy on Ebay who lives up in Vermont. I won't mention his name for privacy and common courtesy reasons. Later he gives the coin to Great Collections and it is up for sale now. Great Collections won't sell SEGS slabbed coins because they're such ________ (fill in the blank). Chances are Great Collection cracked the coin out of the SEGS holder and gave it to ANACS. Here's what occurred:



Now for all of you here that say "I won't buy or trust a coin in a SEGS holder" this is what I have to say to you: you may wish to reconsider.

P.S. I sold the coin for $40 in the SEGS holder if anyone wanted to know.

 

What did it bring in the ANACS slab?

 

$0 (it hasn't sold yet). If you interested it's lot # 221030 on greatcollections.com. They want $39 for it.

I'm not selling this coin (just providing information) so if anyone complains well then that's not too cool.

 

Another way to look at it is: had the coin been submitted to Anacs initially it would have been graded and in a more liquid holder. Should the new buyer crack it out, and submit it to SEGS for a possible downgrade and less marketable slab?

 

That german coin is the rare exception.... not the rule.

 

Dude remember you are talking to a "dealer" who sells acg, gcgs, ani, nnc, nes, wcg, unc, nga, sgs, and pgs.

Until I looked at his eBay coins. All I see you doing is trying to empty the water out of the ocean with a shot glass.

His main collection of coins for sale is segs. You are not going to be able to breach his wall of bias and reach honesty.

I don't know if anyone who knows this guy is trying to change his opinion. His bias is clearly based on his ability to generate revenue using lower tier slabs. What we can do is make it clear that these slabs are not reputable for everyone else's sake. That way, the incorrect information he is spreading will cause minimal damage.

 

I just wish the guy was honest in his listings on ebay. He list damaged coins as errors. Junk slabs get listed with whatever the slab has on it. It's all about the money and nothing about being an honest seller. He is only here to get folks to click on his ebay link.

I'd check the reverse for tampering with a loupe, at least. Or get a 2nd opinion.

I think they have changed over the years but I still would be quite skepticle.

Expensive coins that aren't in a NGC or PCGS holders make me question why, when the person could get more than the cost of sending it in with the premium. If it's an older ANACS, well okay.

Then again, you could just make sure there's a return policy. Usually it's a limited time though, so unless you want rush service I'd probably just ask someone knowledgable and not even bother.
