I gave it a 64 because I can't tell much about the luster.
It's a nice image but it's not showing the luster I
    feel a 65 needs.

Looking at other MS65 1880-O Morgans on Heritage, I believe they are not particularly strict with this date. The 65s have the surfaces and strikes you would expect for the grade. 1880-O Morgans are scarce in gem condition or better, which is why there are so few.

Really hoping it upgrades! I would be able to afford one of my dream coins, after only a year of collecting :)

Here's another coin I recently purchased. What do you guys think about the grade? It looks like a 65 to me, which is why I picked it up. lf.jpg lf-1.jpg

PCGS graded it MS63+. I'm very surprised by the grade. In hand it is a lustrous coin with beautiful clean original surfaces.

Did you ever send the original coin in to be regraded?

When you sent the coin to PCGS, did you crack it out of the NGC holder or did you send it in for a cross?

Also, did you want it in PCGS plastic for your registry set at their site?

I cracked it out. I guess PCGS didn't like the toning and gave it a low grade. I sent it to PCGS since I already had a membership with them, not for a registry set.

If no registry, than why not leave it in the NGC holder?

I believe the coin should have been graded MS65, as did many other forum members. I thought it would upgrade upon resubmission, which is why I sent it in for regrading.

Thanks. I appreciate your answers. I think it's a very attractive coin. From the original pictures you posted, I would agree it had a chance for upgrade.

    Edited to add:
Is the luster subdued? The fields look clean enough for a 65. Just my opinion. I went back and looked at the photos again and that's the only thing I can surmise as to it not getting the higher grade. The last set of photos appear to show nice luster.

Although I have no first hand experience in the matter, I reckon it is real tough to get the higher grade when the price difference is many thousands of dollars higher. As it should be.

To be honest, in hand, it's the most attractive coin I've ever owned. The luster is quite nice, the fields are very clean, and the toning is beautiful. In hand, if it were a more common date, it could easily be a 66. It is cleaner and more attractive than any 66 or 66+ Morgan I've owned. I guess the graders at PCGS weren't fans of the toning.

Even though it is tough to receive a 65 for this date, this coin is cleaner than every other 1880-O MS65 I've seen. I think the color is what lowered the grade, as I can't think of any other reason for them grading it so low. An MS63 should have a cheek with many bag marks and the fields are often full of hits too. This coin certainly does not fit the grade of MS63, in my opinion.

Agree with your assessment of the lack of contact marks in the fields and on the devices. What's really odd to me is that I've seen what I consider to be some questionably toned coins in their slabs. Yours looks very natural to me. I wonder why you didn't receive a higher grade.

I think I'm going to send this one off to NGC. I can't leave such a nice coin in a 63 holder :p

Now THAT is hilarious....:D IMO, the Coin makes the holder and you have one beautiful Morgan no matter what you decide to do with it.
