LCS had this today when I went in.

What are your thoughts on it? Book has VF listed at $7k(that's what he told me)

What book would that be, I wonder? Greysheet for an 1823 (3 over 2) in VF is 45k...am I missing something?

I don't think you are, I'm in the 45-50K range too. Tell your dealer I'll take it for 7K.

... And that is why I will never forget to take my Greysheets with me ever again! ;-)

That coin isn't what he says it is, to my knowledge. All 1823's are 1823/2's. Compare the dates to those on Heritage. This coin is bogus, IMO.

After looking a little further, the date is completely wrong. image.jpg

Yup, it's altered date, although I'm not quite sure how. The 2 is wrong, too.

Have you asked him why a $7k+ coin is not graded/authenticated?

    The date looks really weird.

I think genuine coin but altered date...

Not an altered date, but a completely fake coin. The denomination numerals are way off also, as is the lettering and spacing.

Edit: Nevermind, it matches earlier types.

The denticles below the 1 are wacky... Definitely altered date.

I think I see edge reeding and the dentils look bad. Suspect it is "not genuine".

    It is indeed a counterfeit.

He knows I like old type coins so he pulled this one out to show me. First thing I said was the date looks weird. That's when he told me what the retail was and said an auctioneer brought it in to see if it was indeed real. I think he sent it out to PCGS to be graded, as he thought it was a fake but at the price it was worth if it was real.

Looks like an altered 1833 to me.

I don't own one, but the '23 should be type 1 (large size) while the '33 is a type 2 (small size) bust quarter.
