I believe there are blind coin collectors out there, read about them at some point. They need someone else to look at their coins for them, when buying, but then they have to feel their coins all over, every time they enjoy them. My point, no TPG slab and no CAC sticker required.

Why not the ability to rely on ones own judgement? Good or bad at that, but hey.......take a stab at it. Learn people. Do not rely on others estimations and something that may please you may not please the grading company. The devil with them.....

In my post I talked about relying "partly" on their opinion. It's not a matter of relying only on their opinion or only on my opinion. There are plenty of coins that I have passed on using my own judgment even though they were slabbed.

That one is tough, along with "artificial toning." I think PCGS calls it "questionable toning." A scratch can make it a problem coin depending on its location, size and the type of coin. That said... a DOLLAR coin with a barely noticable scratch shoudn't be a problem coin, IMO. Maybe bring it down a grade or two. Something smaller like a penny and it would be a problem.

The 1921 I'd have to agree is a problem. The artificial toning is tough, unless they noticed a smokey or sulfur smell. I guess there are natural ways siver coins oxidize and it didn't fit. The "bag toning" on Morgans is pretty, though.

I also love how NGC does ancients now, but DOESN'T GUARANTEE AUTHENTICITY if you read the fine print on the site. What is the point, then?

Also, I don't think people will be able to readily counterfeit coins past TPG's, especially the US ones (although it HAS happened before). As technology to reproduce them goes up so will the technology to detect it. At least, that would be my guess.

Technically it would be more johnish as he is the one paying.

Self edited to leave it to the imagination, but it had to do with being blind and members of the fairer persuasion...

I am going to go ponder what I am going to do to celebrate the purchase tonight of my first coin in many months, Southern gold no less. I wonder what Belles could have kept my little goody in their coin purse?

I've had enough negative experiences with raw coins that fluctuate in grades. Sometimes the same coin goes from being a 62 to a 65. And even more it is always the same, high grade to buy low grade to sell.

So I can play this very annoying game or buy tpg.

With tpg as a last resort I can always throw them on gc or ebay and usually get close to or bid.

    GC?

    Never heard of it.

I agree it's good for selling high-end coins on eBay.

Or you guys can follow in my footsteps, as Greenie can attest to....I look at slabbed coins....if I agree with the grade, I will buy and crack out. There are many, many slabbed coins out there that I just don't agree with the grade. The process is the same for raw coins....just no crackin' so its not as fun.

I think part of the point is that at least with it being in an NGC/PCGS holder, you have a starting point for negotiating price.

Disagree. I've bought many coins in slabs, but never paid 1 cent to a TPG.

Now if you submit coins to a TPG, then yeah, you pay somebody to look at your coins.
