If you were building the coolest Jefferson Nickel Set to date that you could imagine, what would you include? Obviously you need the key dates like your 38S, 38D, 39S, 39D, 50D, etc You would also want your War Nickels Most people would say that's a pretty complete set assuming you had your common filler dates, but if you were a Jefferson specialist what else might you include? Include cool proof issues as well! I'll start in the next post with two of my favorite inclusions.
I personally am a fan of the single issue Proof War Nickel My other Jefferson I would include would be the detached leg bison.
Here is my Proof War Nickel from my type set for you. greekpride has a 1943/2 PCGS MS64 CAC in his type set, which he obtained from me in a trade we made.
That's pretty cool. I'm assuming it's been authenticated based off the article. Wonder if any TPG would grade it.
a ms70 liberty v nickel. good luck finding that! but in all seriousness I think you need a nice ms65 3 legged buffalo to top it off.
The OP is talking about a Jefferson Nickel set. What does a Liberty & Buffalo nickel have to do with a Jefferson Nickel set????
Mines not a 67, but of the few times I have looked for a Proof War Nickel I have yet to see one with as nice of color going on at a reasonable price ($125 for this one) I typically see blast white examples or ones with that haze look to them.
How many coins would this encompass? Which ones would they be exactly? I also think for this particular mini-set you should just include the different varieties through 1940. I believe you have regular 38s, then 38s with 39 reverses. Regular 39s, then 39s with 38 reverses, and 39s with 40 reverses Then I believe it stops with the regular 40s, and then 40s with a 39 reverse. I am not sure if that is all correct, but I do know for several of those years there were back and forths with the reverses and I have never really seen it all written out which ones to include if you wanted to obtain all of those major varieties. I cant even imagine including all mints and proofs as well. Does anyone have that information available? Where do you read up on Jefferson Nickels besides those RedBook series?
@geekpryde, You need to go ahead and post this jewel that Mainer was talking about here, id be mighty interested in seeing a purty picture of that one
How difficult is it to see the overdate in hand? Beautiful coin by the way! Just looked at ebay for one and yours is about the best out there right now for any reasonable money.
There are 39s from all three mints that have either a reverse of 38 or a reverse of 40. There also a 1940 proof that has the reverse of 38. So the complete set is seven coins (plus the three regular 1940s if you want to get really detailed) There are no "Regular 39s" (i.e., there is no reverse of 39). All have one or the other reverses detailed above. There are no 1938s with reverses other than the reverse of 38.
