So I already have a 1806 bust half but I kind of like the die cracks on this one. It looks like it had an old cleaning and a scratch on the shield. Comparing this to my other one I own I'd think it'd get F/VF details. Can anyone tell me which variety it is? I looked for the overdate and didn't see that. I'm not familiar with these early coins yet. Now I need a bust quarter for my type set and was wondering if you thought this would grade clean. My concern is between 10/11 on the obverse. VG/F borderline.
I think the 1806 is a O-115 as the bottom serrif of OF is missing , and the die crack extends into the stars .
On more looking I think yours is the rarer O-116 , an R-3 , the obverses are the same , and the reverses have many of the same characteristics , but the leaf points to the center of the I .
The quarter might grade, or not. It depends on whether the obv. marks are viewed as damage or scratches or just normal circulation marks. Early bust coins often get a pass for things like that, or may be silently net graded down a bit. Now, I'm not sure if there may have been some smoothing done in the right obv. field, or if I am just looking at a toning pattern. In general I think it is an attractive coin.
I agree with Rusty's first choice........O-115. I don't think it's a 116 as I see no die crack crossing the lower tip of the eagles tail feathers.
I cracked out my Overton and will second your opinion of the O-116 the leaf points left of center and there's the die crack in united. If it was anything else it'd be the 115a but my volume shows lathe leaf pointing dead center on 115a and no crack in untied
O-116 The F is not an indicator, since it is the same on both. Position of the leaf to the I is tough, very similar on both. Beak position too close, but... A to feather is clearly the O-116
I need to get my hands on this book. I have the Peterson book but nothing this early. I should exchange my Penny Whimsy book for the early half book. Thanks for the help everyone!
You'd think the Philly mint would have more than one F punch . I also think Parsley should have included a line of how similar the O-114 , 115 , 116 are as like you mentioned the F is ok to get to those 3 Overton #s but are non factors in attributing it .
I got the 5 th edition well worth it has more then paid for itself bought it from CBD he had a bunch for sale a while back
