On 09/10/14 my coin collection was stolen. It was handed down from my grandfather. It was a fairly large collection of U.S. coin and a few foreign coins. Totally weight of collection was about 110+lbs. Full books of Pennies, Dimes, Nickels, Quarters , Half Dollars and Dollars. Ranging from 1870 to Mid 1960's. Book holders were in poor condition. Main collection was in paper (old) and plastic (very yellowed) rolls in sandwich bags with cursive hand writing on them. Some of the Nickels were in plexiglass cases with black holder and gold writing. There where rolls of u.c. pennies, dime, nickels, quarters and half dollars. There were a couple of 1/2 cent Netherlands coins from 1914. My Case# 2014-1835 is filed with the Tumwater Police Department in Washington State. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank You.
Sorry to hear that. I guess the police will be doing this, but notify local pawn shops and watch Craigslist.
Contact Doug Davis and fill out a report at http://numismaticcrimes.org/?q=news Also, don't fail to contact your local coin dealers. While, in my case most of the coins were sold to a pawn dealer, a handfull of the coins were liquidated through a local coin shop as well. - Mike
Have you checked the larger dealers that advertise they buy in your area? I had some coins stolen a few years ago and I called the largest dealer in my area that advertises on TV that they buy. The thief was in his shop selling the coins as we spoke on the phone. The dealer called the police, the thief was arrested and most of my coins were recovered, but not all. Best of luck.
Put an ad in craigslist offering to buy US coins. If they are dumb enough or desperate enough, they may answer it, then you can ask what they have, and if it matches, involve the police. No cost.
That's a real shame. I echo the advice others have given about notifying pawn shops and coin shops in your area. Anyone advertising in the local papers or Craigslist, etc, offering to buy coins.
man that sucks. if you recover those coins or continue to collect coins. buy a safe. or a deposit box. or a hiding place only you and family know about.
I feel your frustration. My house, long time ago was broken in to. Lost about $4,000 in material. The time and energy to go through you collection process is time consuming and personal. I wish you the best on finding your collection. I agree with the everyone else on getting a safety deposit box or such. I find it nice to copy my images of my other hobby, baseball card collecting, into my computer so I can look at them without having to get them out.
do not forget lists of your coins with pictures (good in focus ones) on a flash drive or save them on facebook pictures.
The bastards got about 8k to 10k worth. The real bummer is that I bought a safe and was getting ready to reorganize the collection so I could put it in the safe.
Damn MK very sorry to hear that. Same thing happened to me about 5 years ago. Luckily for me my collection was somewhat small and low value stuff. I hope you get your coins back.
If possible, try to think of who might have known you well enough to know when to do it, and that you had them at home. I am sure the police mentioned that the chances it was someone you know and knows you, that did it.
