VF30-35 would be my guess. 1883-S Morgans are typically boldly struck, so the hair wear and breast wear would be considered significantly circulated. The mottled toning might even be enough to merit a downgrade to a solid VF30.
Do you think that the toning would get it a lower grade? I have a 1895-s that looks like a 45 but got a 30 and I think it is because of the toning on it
It might get a details grade or the lack of luster will lower the grade, but I doubt toning unto itself would lower the grade that much.
What makes you say that it has been cleaned Larry? Not to sound like I'm questioning your judgement, just curious.
The color and the look of the toning. I would guess the coin was really dark at one time and was worked on. Keep in mind we are looking at images and not the coin in hand. And I'll add, please do question my opinions. Someone needs to. I drink too much.
Good call on the old cleaning, methinks. Wouldn't have thought so, but some very good points were raised about the 'dead' look of the coin.
Going off of this image alone I'm inclined to say XF-AU. Color is maybe a little questionable but it probably could pass on the market as problem free.
