I found two more 1970-S pennies CRH. I will post the first coin b/c I'm on fence even with the online resource material I have been given from previous threads. The second I'll post separate here b/c that one I'm pretty is a SD. Here's coin #1. Sorry if its a bit bright but that's b/c this coin is bright copper.
The small date 1970 is tricky. Also there are 3 dead giveaways. The inside curl of the number 9 points to the inner crease of the 90 degree angle of the 7, in the large date it points to the bottom of the leg of the7. The small date cent is flat on the top. If u draw a line from the top of the one in the date to the top of the zero all the other numerals will touch and it is referred to as a flat top. In the "normal" version the 0 will be lower and the top slightly below the line. On the bottom if you draw that line the line it will be slightly diagonal.
Coin #1 I think is LD b/c I now see the loop of the 9 pointing downward. But Coin #2 I think is a SD b/c that 0 and 7 looked lined up on a straight line.
I'm sorry I meant to say the 7 is slightly lower than the zero. On non_small date coin. Niether of yours looks like one to me. When I first started collecting cents I had a bunch of 1970d's that I thought were small dates lol.
erm..... Anywho I agree I don't see any small dates here. I think what you were trying to say was you had alot of 1970-s cents that you thought were small dates too, cause I was in the same boat.
I'll post a few more photos of coin #2. I know now #1 isn't a SD. But I still think #2 is. The loop of the 9 isn't pointing sharply downward to the S. And the 0 and 7 along with the 1 & 9 are in line.
Another diagnostic of the small date is the weakly struck letters "ber" in Liberty. They appear mushy. You will know it when you see them.
I had troubles finding my first sd. So I bought a low grade one at a coin show. So when roll hunting I have that example in my hand to compare. Having one like this makes the differences too obvious. I've found one in about 1,500 or more 1970S cents. I wonder if anyone else has done this?
May I ask this forum a question. I am a new member to Coin Talk and recently acquired a sealed bag of 1970-s Lincoln Cents. I understand that many or most of the small date have come from mint sets. Before I open this bag and spend hours looking, does anyone know the likelyhood of finding 1070-s small date in my mint sealed bag. Thank you
