How do you find your world coins and are there silver sets from other countries?

I started a couple of years ago collecting coins. As far as US coins go, I've been trying to get all the sets with silver in them. I am however really interested in world coins and am wondering if any other country makes silver sets too?

There are very few world mint sets that contain silver but lots of really neat world proof sets.

 

I think you would be looking at a very hefty premium. Many were struck with low mintage and unless sellers couldn't care less of what they will get, they can be quite expensive.

 

Ok... well where can I find world coins at? I don't know of anywhere near me that sells any. I have occasionally found japanese sets at antique stores.... one germany set.... but I rarely ever find any.

 

I buy most of my coins online. Have you checked out eBay? There are enormous amounts of world coins for sale there.

 

Yeah but I don't know enough about them yet to buy from there. I know there are a lot of untrustworthy people out there that will sell newbies fakes and stuff.

 

check Ebay for silver sets. Panama, Italy, India, Mexico, France, Jamaica, Bahamas has silver, and many others. if they have low mintages be prepared to pay way more than silver price.

most silver proof sets under $100 will not be fake.

 

Don't worry too much about fakes. A fake set would be hard to create. But you have to check each sellers feedback. I've never gotten anything fake, and I've bought hundreds of coins and sets on ebay. A few times tho I've gotten cleaned coins that weren't labeled as such. The pananma sets in the 60s have silver coins. Also, Canadian ones in the 50s and 60s. A lot of countries with sets in the 60s have silver. Do some research before u buy

 

There are fake mint sets in particular China. In fact in some cases, even the mint set boxes are worth a fair bit of money because some fraudlent sellers buy the original boxes and COA and place fake coins in it, making buyers think that they are getting the real deal. Thankfully, you are talking about coins that are worth thousands of dollars. Wait till it start dropping to the hundreds and then tens... it's going to be ugly times.

 

I personally would not buy some coins from China. to many fakes being made. I bought 1 coin of Ebay that I think is ok, but anything older not in a slabbed PCGS or NGC. I would pass on.

 

Yeah i agree with the last comments. First off, I only buy from dealers in the US. Second, I don't buy Chinese coins at all. The language is a barrier and I've seen too many fakes to even bother. In addition, they don't appeal to me at all

If you don't have the 1900-2000 Krause World Coin Catalog then consider buying a used copy on Ebay (or from a local coin dealer to avoid shipping cost). The Krause book will list the metal composition and mintage numbers of virtually all World coin sets.

You don't need to purchase the newest 2014 edition. The important coin mintage & composition data is the same in a 2006 edition and a 2014 edition.
