Half Dime. Will it grade?

Never thought this would grade. Large image of a tiny coin. Am I making to much of the hits. What value would you put on this as damaged?

I don't think so.
Looks to have been cleaned by wiping.
My Evidence: The toned halo around Liberty and the date on the obverse.

Personally to me it is damaged. This would be one of those coins if in a full grade holder I would not pay full grade money and would probably skip the coin all together. But I do think Doug hit the nail on the head.

 

I agree with Mark. Way too many issues on the reverse for me to ever consider paying full price. I count six issues on the reverse, (one is debatable). While I am used to circulated coins, its just too many for me to feel its a typical circulated coin. No offense, but if they graded this as a problem free coin it would be a coin I would show here proving how bad slabs are.

Based off images i would say no, looks like it got some large hits and possibly has been cleaned i am thinking it would get fine details!!

 

It is such a small coin that the hits are almost unnoticeable. I think there is a decent chance it would grade.

 

The dings and marks on the rim will hurt, but I think the coin could go either way. Put another way, I have seen worse in TPG slabs. I'd give it a 50/50 shot assuming that there aren't any hidden flaws that aren't showing in the images.

Edited: In glancing back, I see a huge hit/dent above the "D" and "I" in "DIME," so I think the odds are lower than I initially estimated. I still think it has a shot based on what I have seen TPGs slab.

 

My guess is that it won't straight grade given the various hits. I don't know its details value.

The way that PCGS is currently grading I would give them a whirl, NGC or ICG would be worth a try as well because of the upside.

A common tactic of any buyer is to run an uncertified coin down as problem, damaged, NG, etc., and then make a low ball offer. If it grades there are plenty of numbers buyers who need the coin.

 

Borderline call I don't like the dings and I feel it cleaned. I think it's got a good chance at a pass due to rarity. Is one I'd not buy even if it does tho as it's not appealing to me

 

Thanks for all the thoughts. Can't argue with any of them. It's a problem coin. It needs a nice holder with the truth shown on the label. I pulled it out to go to PCGS at the next Fun show in January.

 

You could always try segs, acg, gcgs, ani, nnc, nes, wcg, unc, nga, sgs, and pgs holders. I know a guy here who will buy those and pawn them off on ebay to uninformed collectors at pcgs prices.
