New lady I needed for the empress portion of my collection. Couldnt find too many examples of this mint/reverse type. Mintmark reads much better in hand when tilted at different angles. Eudoxia (400 - 404 A.D.) Æ3 O: AEL EVDOXIA AVG, pearl-diademed and draped bust right, crowned with wreath by the Hand of God above. R: GLORIA ROMANORVM, empress seated facing on throne, hands folded, being crowned by manus Dei, cross right. SMKA in exergue. Cyzicus (Kapu Dagh, Turkey) Mint 2.1g 18mm RIC 80, LRBC 2450
Thanks Ones that I can afford?, About two left, lol. 3 if I wanna throw in Julia Titi, but shes more challenging to save for then finding Otho in my paltry budget.
Great coin Mat, love the color, great details.. Here's mine.. Aelia Eudoxia Augusta..400-404..AD.. Wife of Arcadius. Obv. pearl diademed and draped bust right, being crowned by God. Rev.Victory seated supporting shield with Chi- Rho Mint..Antioch..ANTT 17mm x 2.5g.
Well I don't have a Eudoxia although I did buy a Pucheria (her daughter). I gave it to my neice for her confirmation. I had it mounted in a locket but the obv & rev are protected by a hard clear curved plastic shield obv & rev. The coin itself is held by 4 prongs with plastic padded feet. Thus it should be protected against any marks. I'll try to get a photo. The coin itself I bought (from Gorney & Mosche, Germany) for her confirmation, only I got the year wrong and I bought it 2 or 3 years too early. Good thing too as nice undamaged pieces have gone up a bit in price. I buy a similar piece for each of my neices, although the parents of the last one told me they don't want any gift for their daughter. I wonder why? This is a really small & light coin. It's a tremissis.
Nice, Pulcheria was pretty historical & one I would love to own but you are correct, shes gone up over the years
Yes, I'd really like to see that Pulcheria locket (cool idea) ... => #156 on the good ol' ERIC II Rarity scale (pretty sure that would be the "highest" example that I've seen posted) ... ummm, if you have any examples that are situated any higher than #156, please post 'em (thanks)
I believe VK has some higher than #156. Very nice coin and a nice addition to your collection, Mat. Aelia Eudoxia AE3, Antioch, 383-408 AD, 2.3g, 17mm OBV: AEL EVDO-XIA AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped bust right, wearing necklace and earrings, crowned by hand of God. REV: SALVS REI-PVBLICAE, Victory seated right on cuirasse, pointing to a shield inscribed chi-rho which rests on a low column, Mintmark ANTG. REF: RIC X 104
Same here. Though, one I want even more is Galla Placidia, sister of Honorius and mother of Valentinian III. A coin of her would be a highlight of my collection (ok so would Pulcheria but I like Placidia better ).
Nice coin gil. And yeah, I have a ruler rarer than Pulcheria, but only one, and just one coin of that ruler, that emperor being Libius Severus. I've bored you guys enough times with it so I won't post it, but out of all of my Roman everybody, he's my rarest. I'm not sure how my Germanic rulers would exactly stack up against him in rarity, though. I believe he may be rarer than most of them.
Nice coin Mat. Interesting choice, though. It seems most collectors shoot for the Victory/Chi-Rho Shield reverse as a type coin of Eudoxia. The Empress Seated type is no less distinctive in my opinion, but you just don't seem them as often.
E="stevex6, post: 1976474, member: 44183"]Yes, I'd really like to see that Pulcheria locket (cool idea) ...[/QUOTE] I have a photo my wife sent me as a txt attachment. It appears Samsung (my cellphone brand) doesn't allow an attached pix to be synched w/ a computer. Thus I can't download it to my pc. I've asked my sister-in-law to email me a new pix of it. Should be here soon. Actually I wanted a Eudocia (Eudoxia) tremissis but the Pulchera appeared first and I thought I was short of time.
Okay, she got a new photo of it which she just sent me. Sorry for the clarity. The housing is gold but I made the chain silver. I use a particular jewler in the mid-West & this is the 2nd one of these that he's made for me so far. The other just featured a common early 3rd century denarius which I didn't want disturbed due to it's condition.
