Neil, well done. I put myself in the sellers shoes and realize it could happen. I would think the seller in turn should have offered you a 10% discount on any item in his store. That would have been the win, win.

While it was not a listing error, I did have the 'Sorry, I can't sell you this' happen to me within the last week. A WILDLY toned, silver Kennedy half, slabbed by one of the 'big two'. Paid a solid (read, BIG) premium for it, but it was definitely worth it, and could possibly have fetched more, given the toning craze. The seller refunded my payment 4 days after being paid, claims to have sold the coin more than a week before the listing was posted (no communication AT ALL from the seller, not one word, until he gave me his excuse as to why I wasn't getting it, and I sent a few messages to him with no response)! He was selling something that wasn't even in his possession (so he claims).......so, I guess I have to ask, what would the membership here do? I'm torn on what to do as far as feedback. He's not a BIG seller (perhaps 350-400 transactions), but there were MULTIPLE 'best offers', and NONE were acknowledged....ALL offers expired, telling me the seller didn't even bother checking his listing. What irks me is he listed it AFTER it left his possession, and listing something you don't own/have is a 'no-no'. Sooooo, what say you all? Do I whack this guy, or just let it go? It WOULD have been my first 'real' toner (this coin was just fabulously toned, and could possibly be the nicest toned Kennedy out there....I've seen numerous examples, and this just stifles every one I've seen). So, what do you all think I should do?? I don't like being the 'bad guy' (I have NO problem being one!), but I feel this was inexcusable, so HELP me make a decision!!! Thanks.

It's possible the coin was auto-relisted without his knowledge. However, if that were the case, I don't understand how your best offer was even accepted.

In any event, I'd leave neutral or negative feedback. I'd mark the "item as described" and "communication" star ratings to reflect your frustration.

Edit: These comments are directed to Numismania, not the OP.

This is a tough call for me. I neg'd a guy for lieing to me about a coin. I waited patiently (he claimed estate auction problem getting coin released), than he refunded my money without my consent and the very next day the coin appeared on his eBay store. I wrote down the NGC cert so I knew. I also contacted eBay about him. That account no longer has coins listed, but I'm sure he just started another account.

Anyway, since the guy didn't communicate with you at all and he was selling a coin he didn't own, than I would likely give him negative feedback. I'd also contact eBay to let them know.

    Was that an autocorrect problem?

Actually, inscrutable listings are one of my favorite things, because they tend to be missed by keyword searchers, leaving them to sell as bargains.

He never responded to my B.O. (didn't respond to 3 others either, all expired). I hit the BIN on it after realizing that, even though he 'accepted' best offers, he probably wasn't actually accepting them, and wanted his BIN. Where the coin was as nice as it was, I went for it.

I recently bought a coin and was very excited to get it. When I got it, it was a non-toned version of what I bought. I messaged the buyer, and he apologized and said the one I the listing was already sold the week before. I don't know if he sent me another plain one hoping I wouldn't notice or if he somehow "accidentally" shipped the wrong one. He allowed me to return with full refund and paid my return shipping. Glad he fixed it, but bummed I didn't get the coin.

At least your seller did the right thing, IMO.

True. I have bought and continue to buy lots from him because of his great return policy. When I returned the coin, I threw in 2 others I bought of his I wasn't satisfied with, so that shipping was paid for also. Good seller, just had this one mishap.

Yes. A seller had used another auction template, to sell a Canadian $10 gold coin. It had just been listed when I "bought" it for 99 cents, paid for it with PayPal (his auctions were set up that way), and waited for the email... the seller was so fearful of their feedback rating being affected, he actually offered to honour the sale. I declined his offer, and told him that I bought it to bring it to his attention, and to cancel the sale/refund the purchase. Two weeks later, I got a really cool error coin in the mail (he had my mailing address from the PayPal), and a note stating that he surfed my feedback (back when you could do that) and noticed that I bought a lot of error coins, along with a simple 'thanks' on the note.

Had a similar problem with a seller 6 months back i was buying a slabbed late 1950s pf silver Washington quarter, got a super good deal in an auction listing like $8.00 free shipping !! Seller message me sorry coin didn't sell for what i wanted !! I had already paid also, he wouldn't give me my money back, so i called someone with ebay got my money back and got his account banned on ebay because he was a newer seller !!
