So I would have to break up the set and send them to NGC for grading to realize those prices? Pretty good chance that an unopened mint set would grade at least MS60, right?

STOP!!! Before you break up the mint set, what is it? Is it in a hard plastic case or in a soft cellophane sheet? Values for them can be very different. A hard plastic mint set goes around 100 or so whereas in the soft cellophane, it can be more than double of the value.

Main reason for this is that coins in hard plastic case in particular those set in red cardboard are often plagued with corrosion. Therefore it is more desirable to obtain a mint set in the soft cellophane set.

Personally unless you reckon the following coins are in good condition and has absolutely no corrosion in particular 5, 15, 20, 50 kopek and the ruble, I see no reason why you should crack it open. NGC often likes to put high prices to show how desirable to have it in a slab and don't fall for this trap. There's no guarantees that you can sell it for their quoted prices as it's only meant to be used as a guideline.

To make it even more difficult, there's various varieties in this series, i.e. 3 kopek muled with 20 kopek die and vice versa. I've decided not to poke my head into this.

Plastic case. I'll check for the varieties. Set is in my SDB, so next time I go to the bank I'll drag it home and check it out. Thanks for the information. I picked up the set for less than $50 mainly because I liked it. I'll also check for corrosion and take it out of the cardboard case.

    Thanks

yes like gx sad dont break it if its in cellophane sleeve , i only break holders if 60-70 % of the coins inside are corroded ! otherwise its not worth it to pull them out ! especially key dates sets

I bought 1971 5/10/15/20/50 kopeks (loose) at one coin shop weeks ago.
I sent 1971 20 kopek to NGC and it came back as PL66.

So, after the 1960s, what mint sets and single coins are worth more than 10 or 20 bucks. I have some I got for almost nothing, some in the 70s and stuff that are unc. I got some from those franklin mint sets, and I think the only valuable coin was the roubles which were like 30 or something. I thought at the time these prices were a mistake. So what in general, and specifically if you care to mention, should I look out for? Thanks. Oh, nice to see you again cladking. I had a post on ngc about the Krause price guide and you and this other guy who collected South African coins were going at it there for a long time.

Those 1971 coins would be worth easily 40 times of what you paid for, if not more. All of them are tough semi key dates. Shame that it wasn't in a mint set - must have fallen apart.

What's so good if they're still in mint sets? Maybe they were issued at 10 thousand sets, but there's a lot of small countries with such set mintages or even smaller. I guess demand is the major factor. But if you have those USSR coins in unc condition, it doesn't seem like it would matter if they were in sets or not. That's why u see graded ones sell for a lot on ebay. I was just looking at completed listings

It's only a matter of time when people realize that the more coins are broken loose from original mint sets, the scarcer the mint sets become. I personally pay more for coins that are still in the original mint set.

You can always preach "buy the coins and not the holder" however it's up to the market to decide what people want to buy and sell at.

I agree that they were from a mint set as I also found 1/2/3 kopeks that in unc condition.
I sent them all for grading as I was just curious what grade they will be.

It doesn't look like there were many graded by NGC.
