I was going some CRH today and I came across a 1968-D Lincoln Memorial Penny with a 2 and 4 stamp mark on the sides of Lincoln's face. I can't find anything on it online and my local shops are closed for the weekend.

    Any ideas????? Thanks!

What was the purpose behind a counter stamp on pennies?

Sine they were not done by the mint, but by post mint damage, they could represent birthdays/anniversary, the 2 numbers missing 50 million lotto winnings, or by a workman, testing the sharpness of his punch set. One person had 1000 stamped with the date of his divorce and spent them all over a city. Punch sets are so much fun.
