Wow, this coin will be a great rarity well worth the investment won't it? (That was sarcasm in case you couldn't tell.)
Fair enough; I am expressing an opinion based on those facts. I'm not arguing against you specifically; I'm just expressing the opinion that everyone jumping on the bandwagon and paying above mint-issue price because they believe this to be a valuable "investment" are being foolish. This will probably not be worth much more than its bullion value in the long run.
I'm never going to argue that it's wrong to buy something because you like it lol... I don't care for it, but to each their own. My comment was just based on the fad and frenzy some have for this coin because they believe in its investment value. I wasn't saying there was something wrong with buying this coin because one likes it and wants it for their collection. It's just not likely to be a good investment. And if you do want one, don't pay $2500, $3000, or some other ridiculous price from a 3rd party seller... the Mint is still minting them, and still selling them for issue price! Anyone who does want one, buy it there.
If you didn't buy it as an investment, why would you care whether or not its value increases? I don't care what any of my coins are worth, and if their value drops to zero tomorrow I wouldn't be the least bit unhappy about it. I still have a collection of coins I like looking at and owning. What they're worth means nothing except to whoever will inherit them after I die.
Um, but why? I'm genuinely curious why you think so, why anyone thinks so, if they're collecting for its own sake and not as an investment.
First, we got our gold half dollar Monday in the mail from the Mint and it looks good (glad we got it). Second, got an email from a CA dealer today offering the gold half dollar PCGS PR69DCAM for $1,495 and PCGS PR70 DCAM for $1,895 and I see the prices going no where but down. Considering the Mint only strikes about 600 coins before they change the dies out, most of these gold coins are going to be graded PR70DCAM (as of yesterday PCGS has only graded coins either PR69DCAM or PR70DCAM). I hope that all of the dealers paying big money at the ANA show to hoard all of the gold from collectors take it in the shorts before this is all over.
I'm getting ready to contribute my -5 to next week's totals. I thought about asking for an exchange, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to just wash my hands of the entire deal. They're pretty coins, but for the money, there are a whole lot of other ones that I'd appreciate more. I'm with those who figure that they'll soon be available well below issue price. I'll decide then whether I still want to have one (or more). Even if they go up, I don't think I'll lose sleep over it. Although, seeing @Caleb's post about PCGS stats, I wonder if I should send mine in to get graded as condition rarities. (PF67DCAM -- poorest known!)
Let Let's take your argument a step further. Most people do not buy houses as an investment, but as a place to live. If that is the case, why do people care when the economy tanks and the value of their house goes down? If they are just living there, nothing really has changed. For the same reason people care about their house value, they care about their coin values. Not many people want to own something that loses value.
and for the record I like coins! all coins! I don't restrict myself to just one category just like I enjoy all music genres. I enjoy riding motorcycles. and like them all! custom bikes, old choppers, cafe racers modern sport bike etc.. not every person who bought a kennedy is an investor or dealer. as far as having modern coins graded ? (bullion) some people like to waste there money on graded coins but big deal ! for example the Kennedy Gold half, they will all look the same. but some people like having them graded with special labels to differentiate them from others. yes, its a waste of money but so are a lot of things. some people like wasting money on cigarettes, beer, golfing etc.. you get the point. In the end, coin collecting is just a pastime. do it the way you want to.
Folks, I had to remove the posts/photos , as the forum is making the effort to stop thread jumping. Start one on your subject in general discussion if you wish. This thread is on the Gold Kennedys.
