I think Criswell made out well with those checks. If it was for a small amount, a lot of folks never cashed it, instead keeping it as a souvenir. And the money stayed in Grover's account. Hey, you might post one of those Merchant's checks in this thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/19th-century-intaglio-checks.108341/page-4?page=4
"Today's new pickup is an early 1919 Czechoslovakia note" You post many interesting notes. I particularly like the Czech. notes you post. Very interesting! Mike
Thanks for the kind words all... I find currency interesting so I try to make it interesting for others. Tonights new pickup is another obsolete, I have really gone after alot of low hanging fruit in the obsolete department, and alot of that fruit seems to always be Louisiana currency, apparently they printed it willy nilly. I always have liked the three dimensional intaglios used on this note... it's a crisp and clean well engraved $10 remainder...
Picked up a 1901 $10 LT that looked nice for the grade. Decided to turn some profits into a new note, for the first time in a while. Seller's pics.
Today's new pickup is a Brazil 5 Cruzeiros note, similar in design to others but this time the engraving was ripped off by those hacks at TDLR. Still a colorful design, I have to wonder if the contract with ABNCo expired and the government switched over to TDLR who had to reverse engineer the engraving on these notes. On the bottom is the original ABNCo version, you can see the difference and similarity... there are a number of Brazil issues that are like this, changing between the two printers, and the TDLR notes always come out looking like Upham woodcuts...
I mentioned earlier that I am now back in pursuit of the $5 Fed Bank of New York Set...earlier this week I was lucky enough to locate the ever increasingly difficult Block Set B-A and B-B even though there were large numbers of them printed. So while some of you may think that ohhh... these are just ordinary $5's, they are getting more and more difficult to locate in Gem. I hope you enjoy the image.
It's crazy how just a small size NY $5 set is actually such an ambitious undertaking. Good for you for doing it... again!
It is indeed a challenge as it contains ~ 120 Small Size $5's including Stars and all Blocks...some are just down right rare and I had quite a few of them a few years ago... I am on the hunt again..so keep your eyes open for early NY Notes and Stars in Gem Condition.
Tonight's new pickup is another obsolete, this one a higher denomination - keeping in mind that $50 back then was well over the equivalent of $1000 today, this Mechanics' Bank note was quite alot of cabbage. Like the quantity of images on this note, from the crazy train to the assembly of Gods, the snake intaglio, even a steamboat... and it's got that great caramel toning of a well circulated, issued obsolete note...
I have added 4 or 5 lately and considering that makes my total currency collection about 8 pieces...that's a bunch. Nothing to compare to most of those show in this thread, though. I have a separate post for my first obsoletes, but here are the other large notes from the last few days. A 1917 One and a 25 Cent fractional are also on the way. Series 1917 $2 (my only graded note) Series 1914 $5. Pretty limp. Rob
Tonight's new get is a highly desirable but not uncommon note of the Citizens' Bank of Louisiana. High quality multicolor engraving (by ABNCo, of course...) and colorful backs made this one of the highest quality group of note designs. Remainders are common but not cheap, and you can see why... the design elements can be found on other notes, the lady with shield I believe is the same as on the US $20 LT...
I didn't either. Until I did... Tonight's new pickup is a gear switch, the last Legal Tender star, the $100 1966 USN. Always liked this series, I have the trifecta with the regular 66 and 66A...
That $100 USN star great! Is the signature smeared on the note or is it a scanning issue? (I haven't been around much for over two years; just getting back into collecting after taking care of some medical bills. I'm drooling over the last two years' worth of posts here. I'll upload some of my recent pickups soon).
1862 Fr. 16 $1 LT. Got a very good deal on this one. Replaces my other example of the same type, which has staining. Once again, seller's pics.
MEC ... When I was in full force collecting I did own all 3 of these notes in High Grade from the Thomas Flynn Collection (2 of them)..Great notes and pretty special too!
